USM closed out its regular season with a win over Houston yesterday. The Eagles complete the regular season with 39 wins. Next up, Hattiesburg serves as host for the 2005 C-USA baseball tournament, set to begin on Wednesday.
In other news, Florida has asked that USM bump its 2006 home opener against the Eagles to a later year so that it can schedule Miami. As Tim Doherty reports in today's CL, Mr. G must now figure out how to replace the $600,000 payday from his budget.
Looks like the HA is a regular reader of the C-P Reports. Since our expose on Lu Harris-Champer, they suddenly remembered she used to coach here and have done two stories about her post season successes at UGA this year.
I wouldn't worry too much about the Florida game. We could always refuse to move the game and then they would have to buy us out at the tune of $300,000. The net difference wouldn't be as bad since we wouldn't have the travel expenses. Also, with teams going to a 12 game season in 2006, we might could pick up another big pay day plus the $300,000.

If the little guy --- USM --- does something as stupid as that, you can forget any more big paydays. Now that the NCAA allows a I-AA opponent annually, USM will be opponenta non grata for a long time to come. And, don't forget that Auburn could pull the same $*it on USM for backing out of the near date to play them.
I actually would like to see Gianninny do this. The fallout would be hilarious, and of course Thames would have to take another dagger on this one.
USM isn't in a position to start forcing big-time opponents' hands on this type of issue. Sure, this loss can be minimized, but when the news breaks that USM was uncooperative, you can bet that other big-time programs will look elsewhere for their OOC opponents. With USM unable to fill its own stadium, these OOC games have become the bread and butter for financing operations. In short, it would be a bad decision to play hardball with a team that needs nothing from USM, especially when USM is reliant on teams like UF to pay the bills.
I saw the article written by Alan Hinton mentioning Lu, but I didn't see a second article mentioning their exploits. The sad thing is when the new administration came in, RG & SV, they didn't want them to succeed. I am sure they are much happier now that the program is awful. Less work to do once May and June hits and it makes Corky look a lot better when he gets to the regionals with no chance of a CWS appearance.
One funny thing I remember was when USM was getting ready to play Colorado State in the Liberty Bowl and JB was in his press conference and stated that if they won the Bowl Game they would finish as the highest ranked sports team in Southern Miss history and Tim Doherty reminded him that the softball team had finished in the top 8, he about blew a gasket. He started screaming, "We will be the highest rated football team, football team, Tim."
