We have returned to town, as Mlle de Guerre told you we planned to do. Our trip took rather a long time. Mlle insisted upon searching for various lost items of clothing along the roadside. Apparently, the pink slipper was not the only item which escaped her hurried packing the other night. Anyone finding garments which seem incongrous to rural Lamar County are asked to kindly return them to me. If there are feathers, it is most probably hers. There may also be several peignoirs. (I hope I spelled that correctly -- so few ladies wear those any more.) Also, there were delays due to a picnic along the way. I am of the opinion that there is no need to stop for lunch during a journey of less than fifty miles. However, Mlle dearly loves the al fresco experience of cheese and bread (no wine, as she was driving herself) beneath a pine tree. And although Dervish is highly trained, he was somewhat taken aback by the cows, so there were some interesting moments along the way. So we are back, and Mlle is "leaping into the fray" as she is wont to say. Sometimes her leaping has practical applications, but presently we are planning a rather stupendous party. She feels that, having two years to plan, it should take every moment of that time and should reflect the momentous nature of the occasion. In fact, I'm surprised that we won't be growing the grapes for the champagne ourselves. I believe I have successfully squelched the fireworks idea by mentioning zoning ordinances, but she gave it up reluctantly. Now I am trying to dissuade her from the life-size ice sculptures of Professors Stringer and Glamser. Mlle is nothing if not imaginative.
After much contemplation, and conversation with Mlle., I have decided to put aside the applications for the chauffeur position at this time. There is just too much to deal with, and of course, some applicants may now wish to rethink their positions. Have no fear, Mlle de Guerre will completely understand should you decide to retain your chair or deanship after all. No hard feelings.
In the meantime, do look about you, and take great care.
Sincerely,
Hermione Angleterre, Social Secretary to Monique de Guerre
