True, but I think much (but not all-some was TH himself) of the source of that confusion was due to two things: 1. TH still wanted to be Prez and was juggling too many hot potatos cooked by the boss, and 2. SFT was playing TH like a cheap fiddle.

Very true, SCM. I haven't been here as long as you, but long enough to know that you are correct. Can our epitaph be, "I was part of the sad saga that is simply USM, and all I got was this crummy tombstone"?

With that, I'm off to Mrs. Good Plan. Say hello to Missus Cheezer for me.

This sounds like something SACS would be interested in during the big evaluation.  My understanding is that they don't like confusion about authority.  Correct me if I'm wrong (I know someone will!).

I love the humor on this board.

Please don't paint the deans as innocent folks in the USM drama. They bought into SFT and master minded their own nasties. If they suddenly have had a change of heart, it is because they don't want to lose their jobs. A leopard's spots do not change. None of the deans publicly spoke for Glamser and Stringer and certainly not Glamser and Stringer's dean! Admittedly, the COAL dean claimed to be "working behind the scenes" concerning the Glamser and Stringer drama. But how can we be certain? Who trusts this group of deans? To allow the current deans to remain after SFT goes would be a monumental mistake.

I think you may be painting with too broad a brush. I'm convinced that one of our deans is the spawn of the Great Man himself and enjoys his role as a Thames' enforcer. It seems unlikely to me that any individual would be privy to the mindsets of all the deans.

While I was trying to remember how to do quotations on this board, Former Faculty said what I was intending to say. Only much better. Funny that we both made reference to (possibly odorless) paint.

NAGP, I had thought the big cabinet meeting had everyone, including deans. Then representatives left and the deans met with SFT in the "kitchen cabinet" meeting. Beckett informed me that was not the way it worked. SFT met with everyone, except deans, and then all left and deans entered for the smaller meeting.  Deans were not present when FS president spoke to present issues.

Also as I recall, wasn't the PUC was formed after the deans suggested this to SFT to improve communication.

The deans did not meet with the president in their first six months and did not do so regularly until Shelby began his PR campaign in late spring 2004.

There were actually three meetings, regardless of what they were called (executive? cabinet? kitchen cabinet?)  Shelby and his executive team (sans deans and faculty group reps) where decisions were made, the deans meeting where information was handed down, and the larger meeting which was just window dressing.  Heard it has changed now.

Absolutely correct. And Pood is the worst of all. Not just a coward but an incompetent one at that.

And 3. Thames wanted direct presidential rule, bypassing the Provost.  He got most of that while Hudson was still around, now appears to have almost all of it.

Sorry, NAGP, I see now that you got to point 3 before you brought up points 1 and 2.

To respond to scm about deans meeting regularly with the president... no, that isn't what most other universities do.  At Clemson, deans meet regularly with the provost.  So far as I know that's the pattern at most institutions.

The ones at the bottom of the message posts don't work for me either. But these will (click the "more emoticoms" hotlink which is beneath the 16 emoticons. Works every time. And there are more of them:

Doesn't that assume competency in the chief academic slot?

Assume, for a moment, that you're not down the rabbit hole and it's the Provost who's bad and not the Pres?

A bad Provost and a bad Pres, you say?  Well, there must be someone competent in administration.....

Allison,

Astonishingly, you are working with a full slate of administrative incompetence.  It runs the gamut from pretty incompetent to clueless to cosmic ignorance.  You really have to get down to the associate dean level in some colleges to find someone that knows how to suck their thumb, administratively speaking and one or more of these people may depart by July 1.  I suspect that part of the decision to remove SFT was a recognition of what may happen if this crew was left in place much longer.  It would surprise me if this crew can make it 2 more years without at least one wheel falling off the truck.  SFTs opponents may be willing to settle for the 2 year deal in the knowledge that this crew can't go that long without a major screwup that effectively will end the whole mess. Someone mentioned on an earlier thread that IHL knows this and also knows how difficult assembling a rescue squad for a badly injured institution will be.

IHL may even know where the next landmine is.  Have you heard any crowing from JP this spring about applications or enrollment being up for next fall?  All of the enrollment booster bullets have been fired these last 2 years.  This might be the first year of a nontrivial enrollment decline.

There's a silver lining in every cloud.  A last blowup on SFTs watch would obliterate any last vestiges of his support.  This would make it a lot easier to regroup the USM community in a post-SFT world.
