"programmatic expansions"= new online/distance learning programs as far as the eye can see. New programs as "profit centers" from our "change prophet" Shelby Thames.
Am I wrong, or does this sound as if Shelby is being given very precise marching orders? The part about granting his desire to return to his first love is just laughable. If it was his true love, he should have stayed there and spared everyone the messes he has created. I read the phrasing of this announcement as positive on several different levels. Am I deluding myself?
Is a "real" president told what he should focus on? Doesn't a "real" president focus on whatever needs to be focused on? The phrasing here seems to emasculate Shelby to some degree. I suspect he hates that.
My immediate reaction was the phrase "damning with faint praise."
The lab thing is a bad joke. He's not going back to the lab. But he could leave now, and have some years of hunting, attending sports events, chasing . . , no, maybe not anymore. Anyway, my point is, if he would leave, everybody could have a few years of happiness.

Yes: if they had really wanted to commend Shelby, they could have gone on and on and on extolling his virtues -- you know: the way Shelby himself does.
And on a very short leash indeed. Yes, it sounds like SFT was given a directive, do this or else. Any true president of a university is not told what to do by the governing body, but what that body would like to see done. Shelby, for all practical purposes, has been given his walking orders. Its a crying shame he got another year.
He should just fade away and return to his first love, going on safari in far away countries with tour guides who "make sure he has good hunt" with large game animals (could go with a Freudian comment here about compensation but too obvious) so that he can put even more on the wall of his huge, decadent office in teh Polymer Science buidling.
