Uh, did these guys take freshman math? 430 = "a few" professors?

My point in posting this is that they have not given 1 second's thought to the possibility that Thames isn't leaving of his own accord.

They view him as a great man rather than as the tragic figure that he is.

SD, you're absolutely correct. Sadly, nothing we say will change these minds, and it's probably futile to try. Thanks for posting this. I tried looking at their board once or twice before, can't deal with it.

SD,

I would amend "tragic" to "pathetic."  A tragic figure has an element of nobility about him.

While I am not a Thames supporter, I've said from day one that it is evident that Dr. Thames truly loves USM. I believe that he understands that his seeking a second term would be futile and would lead to even greater strife. Basically, no matter what his second term would have to offer, it would do more harm for us at this time than good.

In short, by not seeking a second term, Dr. Thames is putting USM first.

Sayings Shelby loves USM is like saying the guy who beats his wife loves her to death...

I really got tired of people(including SFT) how much Shelby loves USM.  I say Shelby loves Shelby first and foremost and then.........

This guy has an unique way of looking at things,  Shelby is leaving because he puts USM first.  With the new board prez and new reporting structure, he realized it was time to confess his love for USM.

As somone else mentioned...here comes the health issues or wants to spend more time with his family

From EagleTalk:

"The reason there has been division since day one of his presidency is because his detractors never wanted him to become president in the first place. He required people to go to work and earn their pay. People outside the world of academia have to do it, why not university professors? "

How long will we have to listen to this ignorance before it dies out?  I say it never will die out?  The general public will never understand academia.

Here's the link to that EagleTalk thread, which fizzled out this afternoon:

It's amazing how little the EagleTalkers understand.  It doesn't seem to have occurred to any of them that the Board might have put Thames in because he would be bad for USM.

Yes, but Campbell from Clemson loves shared governance more than SFT from USM!

Tell that to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, TAMU, etc. etc. etc.

It is you, my friend, who are living in the past.

Good morning, Jojo!
Like LVN, I have been resisting the temptation to respond to your idiocies--but I just can't let this one pass. I was in Berlin as the Wall was being built, and had ample opportunity to observe life on both sides of it. Listen carefully, Jojo--the style of governance so beloved by Diktator Shelby and apparently by you was the style espoused by those who BUILT THE WALL! Got it? The despotism model was used by the Nazis and the Soviets, now Shelby. It ended in disaster for them, and it will end in disaster for those who attempt to revive it here. What's over, Jojoke, is YOU--because you and Shelboo and all your ilk are up against the forces of democratic rule, the very forces that brought down the Wall. Get used to it.

Please JoJo call SACS and let them know.  Those fools are still evaluating universities with guidelines that require shared governance.  I'm sure glad JoJo did this research and informed us.

"I don't know what to think of this . . . . . .

Based on past history of the two predecessors of Dr. Thames, the next President will be one who believes conflict is not a part of good sound management. The faculty will not allow anyone an opinion other than what the faculty senate spews forth. Having 100% consensus and equality for everyone (as the faculty promote) will only advance mediocrity for many years to come. Anyone who dares to question a faculty member's motives or actions need only remember what happened to Insom just a few short weeks ago. I think the IHL should dig deep into the University and identify those consistent problem children and offer a relocation assitance for them (outside Southern MS)"

I'm not sure anyone on the faculty has ever stated that it should have 100% consensus.

A class statement from a class individual. I for one am happy that you no longer darken the hallways at Southern Miss, Noel.

You must be very lonely holding that opinion, Seeker.  Please share with this board why you feels this way.  Confession is good for the soul, or so they say.

Seeker, Dr. Polk frequently indulges in what is called "hyperbole." Dont' worry about him darkening the halls. He's been "streamlined" -- cast into the outer darkness of a Fulbright. I'm sure he misses USM, but like almost everybody else who got streamlined, he's gone on to bigger and better things.

Yep, Noel is one classy individual (and has the credentials to back it up). Too bad we can't say the same for you, Seeker.

The operative word in your post is "I for one." Yep, you're in a group of one on this issue, Seeker. Have fun with yourself.

By all means, I celebrate anytime we have one less, pompous, self important, arrogant, egomaniacal individual on campus. I celebrated the day I learned Noel was going MSU, just as I will celebrate when May 31, 2007 gets here. Like it or not Thames and Noel are cut from the same cloth, they are just on opposite sides of the issue.

Any chance the Poles will keep him? We can only hope.

Seeker, put down the wacky weed. Noel Polk is as close to SFT in personality, intelligence and leadership styles as Bob Dylan is to Britney Spears in musical talent. Pick up on it.

Andrea,

The venom you spew towards me is always welcome. It reminds me of an old family saying, that was coined by my great grandfather two generations ago. My family still lives by his saying today.

"It is better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for who you are not." - great-grandfather Seeker.

Seeker, at least you come back and defend your positions, even when they're questionable.

As a business person, how do you see the effect on a large institution of having a lame-duck, wounded leader for two more years? Do you think the business community will realise what a bad thing that is? After all, it's more a business concept than an academic one?

Who would you like to see as interim president?

You don't know me well enough to know what venom is...and your myopic view of USM remains laughable.

Funny, too, that you post this quote when you aren't "red-blooded male" enough to reveal your true identity. Some of us are more "honest" than others, it seems.
