Statement of Dr. Shelby Thames, President
The University of Southern Mississippi
COMPLETING THE VISION
In the laboratory, in the classroom and as President of The University of Southern Mississippi, I’ve focused on the possibilities of a bright future for our University.
Most first came to know me as we built one of the nation’s leading polymer science departments while helping Southern Miss gain national recognition. We focused on innovations in the lab that would meet needs for future applications. Our approach was factual and business-like.
This is the same approach I take as President – with students my primary focus. Today’s students are looking for new ways of learning and of experiencing higher education. Universities must rise to the challenge – move beyond institutional comfort levels – and innovate.
My vision is to ensure Southern Miss provides our diverse student body with an educational experience that offers academic achievement while providing research, service learning and real-world opportunities.
Together we continue to make progress to achieve that vision. With that progress in mind, the Institutions of Higher Learning Board today approved my request to continue as President of The University of Southern Mississippi until May 2007, after which I will return to the laboratory, serving as a Distinguished University Research Professor.
Candidly, my career goal was never to be a university president. If it were, my approach would have been that of a ceremonial figure. Instead of traditional and costly inaugural events, I simply and immediately went to work.
As the previous Administration left, I made a decision to step forth for one purpose only: to facilitate change – fiscally and organizationally. I continue this work with a singular vision of engaging students today while positioning the University to meet their needs for tomorrow.
When I applied for this job, I outlined to the IHL Board my vision of what was needed for Southern Miss to be successful. The Board’s interests and priorities and mine were clear, aligned and agreed upon.
Focus. Fiscal responsibility. Growth.
Serving as President through May 2007 provides me the opportunity to see to completion many important projects underway at Southern Miss.
Southern Miss has faced unprecedented challenges – some anticipated, while others unforeseen. But, just as the world we live in has changed dramatically, universities must also change to remain relevant.
For the first time in years, the University is fiscally sound. Our reorganization from nine colleges to five put $2 million directly back into classrooms for students.
Accreditation issues – which do not quickly arise, take time to resolve. We have implemented new documentation systems and reporting protocols and are optimistic that accreditation will continue.
Construction continues. The various colleges are now aggressively bringing in monies from outside sources. In 2004, more than $69 million was raised, up from $50 million prior to this Administration.
The Commissioner and Board of Trustees know that I love this University. I have been privileged to be entrusted to serve as a change agent as the University faced difficult times.
Many key objectives have been fulfilled and others are nearing completion. Now is the time to look forward.
Thanks to the newly initiated discussion and review process, this announcement comes a year earlier than normal. This process helps ensure planned, thoughtful decisions.
My continued service to May 2007 provides IHL and the Commissioner sufficient time to conduct a national search for a successor. A successor, to whom, I hope that I can pass the baton for a long, successful term.
I will have served as president for a little more than five years. After doing everything possible to achieve a seamless transition to a new Administration in 2007, I will return to my first love – the lab. I also will continue to be found in the stands at Southern Miss athletic fields for years to come.
Let me be clear, however. I’m not on the road to retirement.
This Administration will continue to push for excellence, for accountability and will continue to advance the institution.
It sounds to me like this post- resignation statement was prepared quite a while ago. My guess is that the outcome has been in the works at IHL long before today's meeting.

Robert and Petunia,
Here's your evidence that it was prepared long ago. Shelby certainly wouldn't repeat this lie after the number of times it has been shown to be untrue!

Very good sleuthing, "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire." You must be a private eye.
Not a single mention of the faculty and staff, grunting it out through his time in office, mopping up the problems he still thinks he's not responsible for. Thames can't even bring himself to use the usual formula of "returning to the faculty," offering instead that he's headed back "to the laboratory," though he can't keep from patting himself on the back with his DURP title. Reading this statement, one might well think that USM in 2007 will have only one professor for the many students mentioned in almost every paragraph.

This just underscores the fact that Shelboo knows absolutely NOTHING about what a real university president does.
He'll be lucky to serve out one more year, much less two.
"..., the Institutions of Higher Learning Board today approved my request to continue as President of The University of Southern Mississippi until May 2007, after which I will return to the laboratory, serving as a Distinguished University Research Professor."
Still shifting the blame. "I came in here and everybody had pretty much messed this place up with bad debt, overspending, and too much learnin' going on around here, all them liberals and such and that AAUP. So I had to come in here and wash all those dirty dishes, and then I have done my God-ordained mission in life, besides being the great scientist that I am. And, by the way, I established this world-renowned polymers program here.
A laugh. Even in his statement, he is still trying to shift blame! NOT ME, says the Dome Gnome!
