My warmest wishes to Anne Wallace.

As for the trolls who are buzzing around tonight: don't you wish YOUR guy could find a job at a top-tier school?  Instead he merely drags USM down to his own level.

Your guy, in fact, is presently unemployable as a college president EXCEPT at USM.  Please name one other school that would possibly want to hire someone who is so obviously incompetent as an academic administrator.  Seriously -- name just one.

Anne,

Your eloquent post brought back poignant memories of my departure from USM last year. How long ago that seems already!

Warmest congratulations and very best wishes to you!!

And to SFT, absolutely NO QUARTER whatsoever -- EVER!

Anne,

Good luck to you and you will be missed.  To Jo Jo and boo hoo -- well to put it bluntly you can both go to hell and kiss my jolly arse on the way past.  I have no doubt what your problem is -- YOU WISH YOU WERE US.  In the end, though, you did not get the grades (through a lack of ability or overmuch beer I do not know -- but idiocy is my guess).  Or perhaps you did not have the drive.  I do not know and I do not care.  You are stuck in dead end jobs, punching the clock doing things you do not like and going home to people (just a guess here) that do not really like you (if anyone will put up with you at all).  Please do not put your misplaced anger on us -- the folks who did work hard, the folks who did achieve success -- the folks who made it.  That is the central problem of the locals who do not like faculty -- they WISH THAT THEY WERE US.  We get the wonderful joy of teaching the leaders and followers of the next generation.  We get to make a difference in the world through education and through publication.  The trolls and their ilk -- well their most meaningful experience was when they were in college and they wish that they could recapture it but realize that they cannot.  In the end I have some advice for you -- go to church and work out your problems with your preacher/priest.  I suspect that he/she will tell you to not cast the first stone if you ask about what you are doing.  The other advice is to go back to school -- see if you can hack it.  I can tell you now that I believe that you cannot make it.  But try -- for it is obvious that you have the green eye of envy.  If the glass shoe does fit -- then walk into the light my lads.

bye bye,

man, you are such a dumb ***.  if you knew who you were speaking to you would realize this.  this is the very reason troll exist here - you think you're better than those right next to you.  it's rather humorous.

hey, but I did like the referenced "arse" - a term I employed often while studying at the Univ. of Wales in Swansea.  much preferred to ***.

boo hoo,

I see that you are one of those who just can't rid themselves of the "good ole boy" mentality where "who one is" means more than integrity and accomplishments. I, as you, grew up in the land of the name droppers, but I was able to shake that. Maybe when you grow up you will shake that too. "If you knew who you were speaking to," indeed.

boo-hoo,
One of the interesting phenomena on this board is trolls. They take cheap shots and are ugly to people. However, they never answer questions nor do they ever offer any useful, edifying or substantive remarks. Anybody can take potshots. What we would like to see from you, if you are indeed so important and highly placed, is some intelligent defense of your position. Show us that you did not waste your time in Wales solely learning to be a pain in the arse.
All my Welsh forebears, the Maddox/Morris branch, were kind and intelligent people who were able to make their points without resorting to ad hominum attacks.

Boo hoo: I see that you are at it again. I thought you had learned something last night. Instead your come back making more pathic statements that only show your ignorance and poor breeding. I still pity you but that is getting a little thin.

In the first place a person who is somebody doesn't need to tell other people that he is somebody. People recognize that quality in a person without being told. Believe me it is going to take many more years of work and study for you to make up for your parent's neglect in that regard.

Though I join heartily in the good wishes toward Dr. Wallace, she is another hero going from our midst. Great persons of courage who speak truth to power continue to flee this place which so desperately needs heroes. One cannot blame Dr. Wallace nor any of the others who have left for brighter shores of promise and possibility.

But, one also can't help wondering who will be left to turn out the lights when the last hero has gone?

Godspeed, indeed, Dr. Wallace! You will be missed here in a place once filled with heroes.

Ditto David.  And congratulations to you.  Sorry I couldn't make your graduation yesterday.  I was cleaning out my office while I still have my key.    I'm retired.

I will stay in H'burg a while since my wife enjoys her work here.  I will be continuing the fight, but not in faculty uniform (if you get my drift).

Good Luck in Texas!

Ray, the retirees are a valuable and untapped resource. Can you do something about tapping it?

I can certainly try.  Finding out who is still around would be the first job on the list.  Thanks for the suggestion, Friend of a Friend.

I know several retirees who would be interested in being more involved--maybe form a new organization?

If such an organization is formed, please keep out-of-state retirees in mind. I would happily become a dues paying member

Thanks, Ray, and congrats on your retirement! Well-earned and much deserved...but, again, another hero out the door of the place.

Drop me an email and let's see if we can get together over coffee. I'm not leaving until June 27. And, though I won't be in the burg, I'll stay in touch with the situation through this board and do what I can to help the cause.

DJ

p.s. I do like the idea of a retired faculty organization, and you are a great choice to organize it!

Dr. Wallace,

I wish you the best.  I was a student of yours several years ago and really enjoyed your class.  You are a wonderful teacher and the people at UNC-Greensboro are very fortunate to have you.  Best of luck!

Glad to hear you will be around awhile, David.  I'm keeping my email address at USM for as long as they let me.  Email me and we can meet for coffee.  I joined a group of older retirees who meet for coffee at the McDonald's on Hardy St. at 10 am most weekday mornings.  We may want to just drop by McDonalds. I'm working on trying to get Shelby to join our retiree coffee group.
