Sometime back I saw that the old Coca Cola building in downtown Hatiesburg was up for sale. If I recall correctly, it was even on eBay. In view of USM's acquisition of the old Albertson's property (at Cloverleaf Mall) and the old Hattiesburg High School (downtown), the thought occurred to me that maybe the old Coca Cola plant would also be a fit acquisition. Might it be of any use to the university? Did USM enter a bid for that property? What plans are in store for the old Albertson's location and for the Hattiesburg High School facility? I heard many months ago that they were earmarked for Nursing and Arts respectively. Are those plans moving forward?

Aren't they listed in the newly published USM list of accomplishments?
I, too, am interested in what happened to those properties. The last time I drove down Hwy 49 I saw the nursing site sign had come down from Albertson's.

After the Nursing sign came down, it became Hudson's (Billy Hudson - not Tim Hudson) furniture store. It looked empty to me last time I passed by there. USM must be losing tons of money if it is vacant. I never understood why we were in the real estate investment business in the first place, particulary if we have no use for the buildings.
The aquisition of the old high school makes sense in that it is an historic landmark and its development into an arts related facility will better tie USM and the community.
Albertsons? How is this purchase relevant to the history of Hattiesburg? How does it bring the two communities together? The benefits escape me.
What does the purchase of the Coca Cola building bring to either USM or Hattiesburg?
I thought that they had abandoned the idea of paying tons of $$$ to renovate the crumbling down old HS for use of the art department? I recall that we had heard that plans were in the works to sell the Albertson property. Sorry but I can't remember specifics and am hoping some one will remember.

I must take exception concerning the Albertson's building. Albertson's(when still occupying this space) was much ahead of their time. The first Starbucks in H'burg was located in Albertson's.
Now we have a Starbucks on campus and a stand alone on Hardy.
Nobody was dissing Albertson's; what was being dissed was USM's purchase of the old Albertson's building, long after Albertson's ditched us. (I still miss that store, but Corner Market is pretty good).

Amigo, I was only trying to relate Albertson's to the history of Hattiesburg....

Must all acquisitions be historic in nature? If that were the case, USM could have purchased the old Coca Cola building (near Calico mall) for the Trent Lott Center.

Same comment as in my previous comment (above)
