The word is out now that USM basketball coach Larry Eustachy placed a call to both Oxford and Starkville offering a 2-for-1 deal between USM and either Ole Miss or State.  Under his proposal, USM would travel to either Oxford or Starkville for two games, and Ole Miss or State would return one trip to Hattiesburg for a game with the Eagles.  This move was expected by most when SFT hired LE, given that SFT said one of the things he expected LE to do was to raise the attendance bar.  SFT criticized former Coach James Green in this area during the search process.

Both games would likely produce near sellouts, and would do alot to boost averaage attendance, even though many (if not most) of the fans would be supporting the visiting team.  It is not to be, however.  Both Ole Miss and State told Eustachy "No, not now..."

In other news the USM baseball team used a big 7th inning to beat UAB yesterday, while the Lady Eagles softball team beat East Carolina to take the season finale 2-1 (series).  Both teams are eyeing post season play.

We have been tracking the Eagles' RPI over the last 8 days or so.  Here's the latest tracking: 24, 28, 29, 32, 33, 30, 36, 33 (this morning).  Using the most recent games, it looks as though losses to UAB hurt twice as much (loss of 6 places) than wins over them helped (gain 3 places).  UAB was ranked about #70 RPI during the series.  Next up: South Florida, who is ranked near UAB overall.  As of this morning, the Eagles are 10-10 in their last 20 games, and C-USA is ranked #10 in RPI.

Reader Question: when was the last season USM baseball won 50 games or more?

You will not find any 50 or more win seasons at USM.  That's not the big thing.  What's amazing is the scant number of more-than-40-win seasons over there.  I suspect it's only around 5 or 6, including the past 2 years.  I say "only" because USM acts like it's Baseball U.

Hey! That could be the name of John Cox's next "book": "Baseball U: How USM became the New York Yankees of College Baseball." It could have forewards by Pete Rose, Jason Giambi, and the guy who drains the fluid off Barry Bonds' infected, rotting knee. Given the general makeup of the average USM athletics fan, I would suggest this important wrok be published in coloring book form. Crayons not included. Ages 4 and up.

USM Baseball:

Before Coach Palmer Southern Miss had two total 40 win seasons 90-91. Coach Palmer won 40+ in 99, 03, 04, and possibly '05.

Interesting that USM had more people in the seats(you determine the counting method) than

MSU (at home vs Ala) or Ole Miss (away vs Auburn)

The whole state of Mississippi is one giant choke job athletically:

Football
The biggest football bowl game in recent history was played a few couple of years ago by an 8-3 Ole Miss squad.

Basketball
Do they even play basketball in Mississippi?

Baseball
I'd like to see Ole Mss and State's best game against USM's best. I think then all this junk about Baseball U would be put to rest: After USM went 0-6 in 2 weekend series, the Golden Chickens could be put back in the roost. Then Ole Miss and State could go on to choke in the SEC Tournament.

Ahhh, I love traditions.

Need I remind everyone that the Lady Eagles softball team was winning 50+ (maybe even 60+) games in 1999-2001 period, but we through it all away (now they are like 28-30 overall).

It's amazing to me that Pete Taylor will probably have luxury boxes up and running before MM Roberts does.  Baseball gets everything and they can't even get out of the regionals, even when they host (lost to SUBR).

You can talk about sports all you want to, but whether its football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, horsehoes, bowling, billiards, checkers, or monopoly, a university's existance and survival is totally independent of any of them. A university's athletic program, on the other hand, is totally dependent on the existance and survival of the university.

You got that right, Symbiosis. Intermurals would do just fine. And more students are involved in that.

I think anyone who thinks that USM could survive in this day and age without intercollegiate sports is delusional.

Most people (academics or not) have no idea about any portion of USM except for athletics. In fact, most know only football. Students make their choices of schools in large part based on what campus activities -- athletics inclided--are available. There is a definite, documented enrollment effect when a school has a winning athletics department. If USM cut off intercollegiate athletics, it would sink to the very bottom of Mississippi's institutions of higher learning and would stay there. Students who could would transfer to UM, MSU, or JSU, leaving USM as a pseudo-university with JUCO enrollment levels. We could probably even go back to calling ourselves "Mississippi Southern College."

Fifty years ago, those of you who say the academy is greater than athletics would have been correct. Today, however, you simply appear fifty years behind the times.

Last year I attended graduation ceremonies at a Tier I University.  There were many students who had won national and international academic awards.  The president of this university is known for his academic achievements.  No indvidual awards were presented during the ceremonny. When a graduating "star" student athlete made his way across the stage the university president gave him a "high five" to a roaring ovation by the audience.(friends and family of the other graduates?/!)

The simple fact of the matter is athletics is above academics in most colleges and universities.

Many schools survive quite nicely without big time football. Ever hear of the University of Chicago? How about MIT? Some survive quite nicely with no football at all outside of that provided on campus. Ever hear of Carnegie-Mellon University? How about Virginia Commonwealth University? If you read this message board regularly you've probably heard of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Students make their choices of schools in large part based on what campus activities -- athletics inclided--are available.

Ask your students. You'd be surprised how few students select a college because of their football program.

Fifty years behind the times? I've may have attended more major college bowl games during the past fifty years than you have hairs on your head. This year my schedule would only permit attendance at one, but I did see some great SEC and ACC games in person. But my academic/athletic priorities are properly placed.

I don't suppose that has anything to do with every school around being out for summer already, except USM (another dubious distinction in my book).

You'll find that more colleges have dropped football than have adopted football. It has become painfully evident to some colleges that professional athletics on college campuses can bring more problems than they are worth.

Division I colleges that no longer play football

Prof who supports sports,

A school that can't survive without intercollegiate sports probably has no legitimate reason to survive.

Take football for instance. Dozens of colleges have dropped their intercollegiate football program. The most recent I know about is East Tennessee State University which dropped football in 2003. If you've never heard of them, maybe you know the University of the Pacific which dropped football in 1995. Even if you've never heard of the University of the Pacific, you have surely heard of their most famous football coach and one of the best known coaches in the history of the game, Dana X. Bible.

Other schools who dropped football are Mercer University, Birmigham-Southern University, Boston University, George Washington University, University of Vermont, Stetson University, Saint Louis University, Pepperdine University, Providence University, St. Josephs University, Old Dominion University, Marquette University, Loyola of Chicago. I could go on and on. Dozens of them. All of them survived. Their names are common household words among prospective students who go to college for all the reasons one is supposed to go to college.

I know of many schools that dropped their football program, but I know of only one that seems to be trying its darndest to drop the English department.

So, you're arguing that Ole Miss students could've gone to Auburn.  And Bama to State (for baseball).  This is silly.

Answer to Reader Question:  USM has never won 50 (or more) baseball games in a season.  The Eagles have had 5 40+ win seasons in history.  These were '90 (42), '91 (42), '99 (40), '03 (47), and '04 (45).  The last 3 of these were under Corky Palmer.  If the analysis is restricted to regular season games only, the Eagles have had just 2 40+ win seasons.  These are '03 (41), and '04 (40).  Thus, the winningest regular season campaign was the 2002-2003 season, with 41 wins.

Today, the Tulane Green Wave has 42 wins on the season, while the U-La-La Ragin' Cajuns have 41 wins.  These are nearby regional foes.

That should have been Amos Alonzo Stagg, not Dana X. Bible. My error. I sometimes get the great coaches of that era confused.

Mercer, Birmingham-Southern College, Boston U, Stetson, St. Louis, Pepperdine, Providence College, St. Joseph's, Marquette, and Loyola-Chicago are all private schools. U of Vermont is quasi-public (mostly private). They have a different mission than USM (or any public institution) does.

Name the top USN&WR public universities:
1. Cal-Berkeley
2. Michigan
3. UVA

and all three have football.

I hope you are not suggesting that a university's "mission" or "public status" should determine whether or not it should field a football. team. Tulane, Stanford, Harvard, and Vanderbilt probably wouldn't be very happy about that.

I can picture this in a USM publication: "We, along with the University of California at Berkeley, the University of  Michigan, and the University of Virginia, field a football team." If I'm not mistaken, USM used a similar line regarding the USNews rankings.

I listed some of the many very good schools who dropped football in order to support my previous assertion that a school can survive very well without its students tossing the old pigskin around.

i know you. You're the middle-aged guy who's pissed off that he never could play football past high school and have adopted the "I'm too cool for football" attitude.

Bet you have your kids going to private school and will encourage them to do something like walk-on the swim team at a small, private liberal college instead of going to a state school with parties, beer, and, of course, football.

Thanks for constructing what you believe to be my profile. And thanks for providing information that says something about you too. You seem to be unhappy with the football data I furnished. For that I am truly sorry, but there's no way I can get those numerous schools to resurrect their football programs. Goodbye.

There was a picture in Monday's (5/9) HA of Sela Ward giving the commencement address at Alabama.  So, no UA was not in session after all.
