In a recent report, we noted the possibility of "RPI trouble" for the baseball Eagles come post season selection time. At that time, a reader(s) reported that our statement was "b.s." because USM's RPI was #24. We rebutted that our statement represented what that RPI might be in late May or early June. After the latest RPI update (about 1:00am, 5/5/2005), USM's RPI stands at #32. So, it is trending in the direction we noted recently. Last night's 2-4 loss to #173 (at game time) Southeastern Louisiana didn't help matters.
This defense (above) is not to say we don't ever get scooped (or make mistakes). A poster recently relayed a story about the financial retreat of the Hattiesburg Harrington family. We must admit we were scooped on that one. We had a report on it back in March, but it was too short on details to present. The poster (we forget his/her moniker) provided much more meat, and from what we read, everything he/she included was consistent with the few details we had. This story is very probably real history (at this point).
We got some interesting reports recently on the Raines signing. Much of it's from sources a few to several degrees away from the actual events, so it might not be the best info. From what we heard, at the beginning of the Raines recruitment, SFT told Bower that the kid and his mother didn't need to make the trip to Hattiesburg. A quick phone interview and scholarship offer would've been sufficient (for SFT). It was Bower who arranged the trip/visit, because he wanted to see Raines face to face, and have RG and SFT (and others) meet with Raines. We are also being told that Bower arranged for his current players to meet Raines. One source says that the current team even held a Yea/Nay vote on Raines' scholarship offer at a special meeting on the situation. The result was an overwhelming "Yea" vote for Raines by the current roster. Reportedly, at one early meeting on Raines attended by RG, SFT, JB, LSM, and a few others, Bower's DC showed a brief video of the guy in action and SFT blurted "cut someone if you have to to get him..." Mader (reportedly) instinctively blurted "No..." Bower quickly explained that if he was offered "no cuts [would be] necessary..."
Again, some, most or all of this may be erroneous. We can say though that in this story Bower comes across like Bower (good), Thames like Thames (not so good), etc.
Today I received an email at my USM account. It is from an unhappy person who thinks we are wrong to give Raines a scholarship. This individual sent this little note to me by way of Academic Council. If you click on the "contact us" on the USM academic council web site, you are emailing me and the chair elect. We often get rather random emails. I now expect more like it.
The email was not threatening in any way. There was no "language" in it or anything. However, I was unhappy about it. I didn't award the scholarship.
I forwarded the email to the provost and deans and suggested that if this happens to anyone else or to me again, perhaps security measures should be taken.
But in reality, this is a job for PR and Marketing!

While I do not enjoy getting emails chastising me for others' actions, I think there may be a reasonable explanation: the sender may have emailed a number of people who may have some ability to influence campus goings-on through policy setting, etc. If this is the case, then I think it should be taken as a compliment: the person thinks you have some input into policy. As such, you know it's not a Thames supporter, since they think faculty should not affect any facet of administrative life.
