"The tipping point for trustees to fire a president is unclear and depends largely on the situation. The most common trigger seems to be poor communication by the president, whether with the board itself or faculty members, students, alumni, or donors. Presidencies can also crumble when boards do a poor job searching for a new president, or a president starts making big changes that are opposed by constituents, like professors. These situations can cause a reaction more severe than a vote of no confidence -- faculty members start leaving, for example. Often, a poor job of managing finances, fund raising, or enrollment can cause a board to question a president's leadership." Chronicle of Higher Education, May 3, 2005.
