I intended to finish my career at USM. My departure is due solely to the actions of SFT and the atmosphere his atministration has created. Have I had second thoughts about leaving a place I have thoroughly enjoyed--students and colleagues alike? Yes. But postings like the one by Eagle Talk Regular make me know I made the right decision.
The truth seems to be although SFT himself is poison, he did not put all the poison in the pond. It was there all along, lying dormant on the bottom. He arrived and stirred vigorously stirred that pond and voila! the anti-intellectual hate (and it is hate) rises and contaminates the entire pond. I don't want to live in this atmosphere.
By the way, I am a graduate of a football national title winning university--like Patti. Sports are very important there. Winning teams provide a rallying point, something concrete that alums can tout. But my alma mater always, always puts academics first. During every football game broadcast at least three research projects or recent publications of faculty are spotlighted. There, it is clear what the real work of the university is.
"Bottom line Eagle talk regular, it takes a thing called PRIDE in your institution to pack a stadium, to make going to work a joy instead of a dreaded ordeal. "
Patti is absolutely correct. I am now associated with an institution where athtletics are successful and big. But it is very clear that this institution wants to be a center of learning and research. Never been a class let out for an ESPN game here.
Actually, I have a ph.D. and have taught at an SEC university and a WAC university as well as at USM.
Eagle Talk Regular, I don't believe you. Your kind does not know how to be honest because they had rather lie than tell the truth. But it really wouldn't make any difference if you were a ph.D and had taught at Harvard. There is a difference in someone being brilliant, having class and being a role model for young people and what you are - which is an ignorant jerk who should not be allowed to be in the same room with a young person.

Well Eagle Talk Regular, if you have a PhD, then tell us what the secret handshake is. You would know this if you had a real Ph.D.

Are you at liberty to tell us the field in which you received your alleged doctorate and the school by which it was granted? Or, if revealing that combo would be revealing too much, can you at least tell us one or the other? I'd be very interested to know in which field, and/or at which school, someone with attitudes like yours can actually receive (almost said "earn") a doctorate.
I remember now. At my purchase level for the PhD in Economic Development Numerology, there were only three options from Column A. I chose the ginsu knives, pocket version of the job snowballing handbook, and the suitable for framing certificate. If I'd only known how important the handshake would turn out to be, I might have made better choices.
Hey, lay off my friend Eagle Talk Regular. We both earned Ph.D.'s together at Nitchampburg University in "Non-academic studies". Perhaps you've heard the results of his groundbreaking dissertation: Football or basketball: Which should weigh heavier in choosing a university?
I need to clarify something for not so dearly departed. I did not graduate from Ohio State, I said it was my university of choice, meaning I have followed the buckeyes for years and years, and the more I followed them, the more I learned about the excellance they put into academics and athletics. I did graduate from a college that shares a campus with OSU and I tried to get tickets for the OSU/Michigan game in 1996, they were having a lottery to get tickets. The horseshoe was packed that year as it is for most home games.
