When will folks understand that writing is essential to EVERY discipline, and therefore should be reinforced at EVERY opportunity? This is not just about what happens in English classes, folks."
Your comments remind me of an observation I have made over many years: those with a broad as opposed to restricted educational background are the ones who wind up as the leaders in their professional endeavors with major industy. Technical skills become obsolete very rapidly. A broad background in the liberal arts and sciences is enduring. In that sense, the faculty losses in English and history and the other liberal arts at USM is not good for economic development.

AND liberal arts "skills" are difficult to outsource to third-world countries, whereas technical skills are the easiest to outsource!
