What I find truly amazing is that Toy McLaughlin is supposed to help raise money for USM. Either he is a bit unstable (evidence- threatening to take a high powered rifle on top of the Administration Building) or he really hates 93% of the university. In either case, I can't understand how he could possibly be effective raising money or credible as a spokesperson.
The last time I heard, the Foundation was two or three years behind on audits--and, if I remember rightly, has requested tax filing extensions for a similar period.
I suspect that almost everyone who knew how the Foundation worked, and where the money was/is, is gone, and/or not talking. I also suspect that just as programs and offices have been renamed, closed, moved, reopened, etc., so the university's money--especially the private portions of its money--have been shuffled, relocated, etc.
I've never been sure whether we needed Sam Spade, Bob Woodward, or Super-Accountant more--probably all three.
