The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning has charged interim commissioner of higher education Richard Crofts with immediate implementation of a new governance model in the state’s system of universities. The model, approved by the Board last month, will require institutional executive officers of the state’s universities to report to and work directly with the commissioner beginning July 1.
“Full implementation of the new governance model will take some months,” said Virginia Shanteau Newton, chair of the commissioner search committee. “We want to begin implementing the new approach quickly to sustain valuable momentum in making changes the Board seeks in the system. We have asked Dr. Crofts to move forward aggressively with the Board, his staff, and the institutional executive officers in implementing the new model.” She added, “Although Dr. Crofts is not a candidate for permanent commissioner, we believe that, under his leadership, we can begin to bring about structural and behavioral change that will allow our system of universities to operate more effectively.”
The search for a permanent commissioner continues with placement of ads in upcoming higher education trade publications. The Board’s search consultant, Greenwood and Associates, has indicated that it may be the end of the calendar year before the position is filled.
With all the talk on another thread, reading the press release above, Crofts appears to be interim, although the board seems to be moving to implement the governance model.

That's not quite what this document says. It says that deleting the term "Interim" from his title underscores their desire to implement the new governance model without delay. What's in a name posted this on the other thread (emphasis in black is mine):
Here's the text of the memo, which I think provides stronger rationale than the press release:
"we believe that deleting the “Interim” from his title underscores our desire to implement the new governance model without delay as we continue the search for the permanent Commissioner"
Invictus said he read the memo. What more proof do we need? I don't think he would say so if it weren't true. But I suppose with all the trolls who have posted in the past some have every reason to be suspicious.

This sound like the search ran into a snag. Are they just starting to advertise the position or did the search not produce acceptable candidates and they are starting over. They originally had August as the target date for the new commissioner.

Perhaps this is a good thing; it might be just as well to have Commissioner Crofts in the position as long as possible, since he has been investigating Shelby. He also has "nothing to lose" if he ruffles feathers, whereas a new commissioner might have much to lose, especially if he or she is in mid-career (whereas Crofts presumably would be happy to go back into retirement, his integrity intact).

It might be crow he ends up cooking. Or his hat. Or something like that.
But returning to the topic for a moment, why don't we just take the memo at face value. The board says it is removing "interim" from Crofts' title so they can proceed with implementing the new governance model while searching for a permanent commish. My guess is that with "interim" in his title, there would be those who wouldn't think him empowered to do evaluations, etc.
I take the move to the new governance model as a very positive thing. And everything I've heard about Crofts indicates that he is the kind of person who ought to be guiding the implementation. I've heard good things about him from faculty, from his own staff & even from neighbors who have met him at non-academic functions.
