Perhaps it would be more appropriate to create a new board for discussions of this type. Many readers/posters are not city of Hattiesburg voters, and to inject city specific political discussions into the overriding theme of this board has little purpose.

Okay, I jumped into the fray because of your comments about Toy McLaughlin and because of the implications of groupthink. I'll back out and return to focusing on the Lamar County bond issue.

The term Jackson-South, means not South Jackson. It means that Hattiesburg could very well turn into mirror image of Jackson, only geographically to the south. I am amazed that I have to explain such as simple concept to a group of individuals that claim to be academic elitists.
The characterists of Jackson that I hope Hattiesburg dose not mirror are:
Corrupt Police Department - Sorry, we've got that.
Decreasing population - population in the city is stagnet, not declining...yet.
Economically stagnet - growth rate has slowed in the last 4 years.
Blighted downtown area - could happen, but downtown H'burg is nice right now.
Infrastructure in disrepair - Drive down Lincoln Rd, Broadway Dr, West Pine, Hardy St, and 4th and 7th streets and tell me we're not there. I won't even get into storm drainage and sewer problems. At least we have clean water, I hope.
Balloning City Government: The number of city employee's has skyrocked under the Dupree admin. We are a city, not a job bank.
I really don't have time to go on....but I think most get the point.

But Kudzu King and others have injected other issues by statements such as "And a few incompetent faculty members." It's virtually impossible to separate town and gown.

I hold an appointment at USM and I'm just a good ole boy from Mississippi. It's likely that my Mississippi heritage goes back even further than yours. Who has self-identified themselves as "academic elitists?" None of my colleagues, that's for sure. It sounds like you've had very little direct contact with faculty members.
