It's to see an article acknowledging professorial effort.
On the other hand, it's hardly true that we only started putting in 60-70 hour work weeks with the SACS effort. That's a typical work week. In fact, we've been saying for a long time that if we only put in 40 hour weeks the place couldn't run.

This little HA piece appears to be a feeble effort by the administration to neutralize Toy's statements about lazy faculty on the ET message board. It seems that their "days work for a days" pay spin may have spun out of control.

Jameela, I noticed that this piece is listed as a "PM Extra" posted April 24, 2005 5:00 AM in the online edition. I couldn't find it in the hard copy edition. It may be a preview of a longer article for tomorrow.
This does appear to be a teaser for a longer article to appear the next day.
It looks to me as though Joan Exline is trying to mollify faculty members without whom she hasn't a prayer of successfully dealing with SACS.
She may also be making a few plans for life after Shelby Thames.
I doubt that the latter will succeed. How will anyone who has had to work closely with her fail to remember the dirty work she has already done on Thames' behalf?
I won't forget her dirty work - I just happened to see it working first hand around March 2001 before Shelby was annointed El Presidente. But, of course - Shelby was a "done deal" throughout that sham of a presidential "search".
Shelby was a done deal long before that. Try a year before Fleming left. Fleming would not play ball with Shelby's buddies most of whom have a lot at stake financially and socially in athletics, in particular. Nope. This was a done deal long before any sham of a search.
Yes it was a "done deal." At least in the sense that the deck was very stacked.
Who can forget Trent Lott saying publicly, while the search was in progress, that "Shelby Thames will be a good president."? Not "would" but "will."
One candidate removed his name from consideration when he learned he was to be interviewed in a building named for one of the other candidates, i.e., the Thames Polymer Science Building. Even if such scheduling was not intended to intimidate the other candidates, it evinces such poor taste as to be absolutely non-Southern.
Oddly enough, the over-the-top promotion almost cost him the appointment -- particularly, Bobby Chain's openly aggressive politicking for SFT at receptions for the other candidates. Chain's activities were so offensive to certain IHL Board Members that SFT was ultimately selected by a single vote. The 11-to-1 final vote represented the capitulation of everyone other than VSN.
