Sorry, but if I think your paradigm is mistaken -- and, more important, if I think the opposite paradigm has actually had a success you refuse to dispute and don't seem able to deny -- then I can't help but reject your paradigm.  As the for gratuitous comparison to your son, I'll leave it to others to judge who is picking up his marbles and going home.  I'm just asking you to DEFEND your paradigm; you just want to state it and restate it.

Remember: our discussion began when you suggested that we should be hoping Shelby gets a successful and competent PR person. I still can't see the wisdom of wishing for that, and (heck!) now you won't even lower yourself to enlighten me.

Lordy, lordy, where you been?  Ol' Invictus been beating that drum for a long time.  I agree with him, I think.  Sort of.

My variation is that "they" don't have much of a road map or a particular plan.  I hold to the tacit conspiracy: they (the die-hard, old-boy, athletic-supporter, entrenched, status quo, Jackson-to-the-Delta-Plantations, old-cotton-money folks -- y'know: "them")  first, under funded USM (in the legislature), then (at the IHL) put a megalomaniac in place as president.  It's not a coherent plot, but it's damn well working like one.

There are just enough opportunities at decisive moments where separate and independent decisions can be made that further the common, but not necessarily expressed, goal of allowing USM to eat itself alive.  The huge irony is that so many of the people in the Hattiesburg community (including Himself) buy into Shelby's shuck-and-jive because he's preaching what they want to hear, and none of them want to hear anything "negative."

It's Pollyanna before the Third Reich.  Bambi versus Godzilla.

Or, in the words of Mr. Potter, "Do I exaggerate?"

Sorry, USM Sympathizer.  You had us headed back to "the glass is half full," and I got sucked into "the sky is falling."

Seriously, I do think things are bleak.  Even if SFT joined Judge Crater tomorrow (i.e. disappeared -- no threat intended), it will take at least ten years IMO for USM to recover, maybe longer.

That said, I am optimistic, because I honestly believe that the faculty would be up to the task.  I also believe that the Pollyanna mentality will endure long after SFT is gone, and the "community leaders" will not turn their backs on the next administration.  Not because those leaders are particularly perceptive, but because of their enduring, consuming self interest.  USM and Forrest General are the two elephants in this living room.  Everybody in town wants a little of the action spun off by those two.  Some bank or bottler will always be willing to fund the next scoreboard or opera, if they think they can get a little exposure or new business.  And if the dang Foundation has the good sense not to send all of their business out of state.

Also, I echo your question to our new friend, lordy. (Anyone who seems surprised at Invictus's insight has got to be new to the board.)

Don't just tell us what we're doing wrong; tell us what will do some good. And please don't just say "give up and give in."  It is more than obstinacy that keeps us going, though our sheer resolve would be sufficient. Or vice versa.

My only suggestion for the next director of public relations is this: Treat ALL students with basic dignity and respect. I've been away from USM for a couple of years now, and I will always remember Mader for trying to berate me - a student at the university. That's the worst type of relations with the public I could have ever recieved from a university employee.
I hope Mader is pleased with her legacy at her alma mater.

I understand that this new job is a big promotion with a huge jump in salary, right?  I mean, she has done such a good job at USM that she was highly sought after by an even bigger and more prestigious employer, right?  USM was just a rung on the ladder to get to this plumb position, right?  It's almost like Gary Stringer going from USM to Texas A&M, right?  I mean, it's almost a quantam leap in status and prestige, right?

I still can't believe that any institution in a town where Lisa Mader has lost her credibility with the local media could be her first choice.

I can't believe Wesley would hire her. As the airline farewell line goes ("We know you have a choice when it comes to flying...thanks for choosing Delta"), so goes the choice for hospitals in Hattiesburg. I'll choose Forrest General from now on, although I've often found Wesley to be more convenient and "people friendly." I guess they've rethought that philosophy and decided they want their patients to be whirl class.

LSM has never stayed in one job very long. Two years is her average. For someone who has been in the professional workforce less than 15 years, this will be at least her seventh different job (1. USM Foundation - Donor Relations; 2. City of Hattiesburg - PR Officer in the Morgan administration; 3. Trustmark Bank - Marketing; 4. Governor's Office - Director of Communications in the Musgrove administration; 5. Baptist Health Systems - Marketing Officer; 6. USM - Marketing and PR Director; 7. Wesley Medical Center - Marketing Director.

Her two tours of duty at USM probably add up to enough time to be vested in state retirement, and we know she was paid very well as SFT's "spear-carrier" (Joe Parker, HA, 4/23/05).

There is no downward move from this sinking ship.

Just as there's no need to kick someone when they're down (!), there's no need to kick them when they're out.  If Shelby weren't such an abysmal failure, there wouldn't be this constant turmoil and turnover at all levels of the university.

We should say, Goodbye, Godspeed, and better luck next time. No more kicking the girl around. We wanted her gone, she's gone. Maybe she's learned some important lessons through what has to have been a miserable couple of years for her. Lesson one -- be nice to the people you pass on the way up, you'll be seeing them again on the way down. I don't say this to be smart, I say it from the voice of experience. Lesson two -- do your work as unto the Lord and not as unto man. Then you won't have anything to be ashamed of. Lesson three -- don't drink in public in a town where people know you.

Webmaster: why did the title of this thread change? See the title above the post preceeding this one and compare it with the others. How is it possible to alter the main title of the thread?

The post "really" did says "Lisa's ast day/boy toy.  All of the other posts on this thread say only "Lisa's last day."  Invictus, I'll bet you know why the difference. I'm probably just too computer stupid to figure it out.

Anyone can change the "topic" line of their own post. See above.

Yes. I see. That was the first time I had noticed anybody changing the topic in midstream.

Dear USM Sympathizer:

I am no lawyer but if I knew your real name I would spend my own money to hire one to sue you for purely being stu*!d.   If I were to guess you are proably Frank Montague.

Just hire my wife to argue your case; she knows all the relevant evidence.
