McLaughlin should resign from the CoB Advisory Council today. He thinks very little of USM faculty in the CoB and elsewhere. It's the right thing for him to do.

I was dissappointed he didn't address the longer rant about USM faculty. I doubt very seriously you would get such a thing out the President of the fundraising arm of any serious university in the USA. I would be willing to bet on it.
Toy McLaughlin is an example of what makes USM such a Tier 4 school (and falling).
The boy Toy needs to apologize profusely to the Warren paving crew because they do not like threats of violence. Remember, the pavers had to excavate this message board to find "statements" to twist into "threats of violence" (for which we now have the METAPHOR ALERT). Toy's statement needed no twisting. The fact that he is part of not one, but two influential external leadership bodies (CoB Advisory Board and the Foundation) for this university is amazing.
Unless he apologizes the the faculty for calling over 90% of them lazy, (those that are not for Thames are lazy, +90% voted no confidence last year), then 2004 is the last year for my Foundation contributions or the matching contribution from my employer.

Thanks for calling attention to the significance of the 90% figure; I hadn't thought about it in those terms until you pointed it out, but your inference makes perfect sense.
Toy and the other Thames supporters couldn't recognize metaphors when used on this board (by the way, I learned about metaphors and how to use and recognize them in elementary school - not in MS, though) but he believes everyone should have recognized/understood that his threat to take a rifle to the Dome and start shooting was done in jest??? This guy is sick, sick, sick. And he is such a great business man? After the shootings from the tower at Univesity of Texas and so many shootings in schools around the country, one would have to be pretty stupid and insensitive to make a threat like this; and then when admonished for making the threat blame everyone else for not understanding this was done in jest. Another ego-centered "little" person and I don't mean in stature. If this threat had been made in an airport, a Federal buidling, or on some online message boards, ole Toy would be trying to explain himself to the authorities (and I don't mean the USM campus cops either.
This man needs to resign as USM Foundation President ASAP.
One of the main things that McLaughlin fails to recognize is that when someone takes a position of public responsibility they cannot seperate their private self from their public self. A public person does not have a private life because they represent the whole body of people in which they are in charge. He should also know that since the time of President Kennedy's assassination people cannot make violent threats and then say that they were only joking - especially in public.
There's violent threats and there's violent threats, public person or not. He could have said, "I'm comin' over there to beat some a$$es" and nobody would've blinked. It's the tower/rifle image that was so horrible and crazy. And hey, Toy, it wadn't a very good joke, ok? Were you drunk? If a faculty person said it in class they'd be in jail today. (Just like they'd have been fired pronto if they talked to students the same way Robbie was talked to by Lisa & Co.)

Not to mention the fact that the leaders of the Pro-Thames rally held at Warren Paving last month deliberately tried to incite anti-faculty sentiment in the Hattiesburg community by distributing out-of-context, misleading excerpts from this message board in a pathetic attempt to frame faculty as threats.
Like everything that Thames is associated with, it is the lies, hyperbole, and hypocracy that bother many of us the most.

I was reminded not of JFK, but UT-Austin and Charlie Whitman. I must admit, I did not take McLaughlin's comments seriously, but neither did Charlie Whitman's doctor:
You are so right Lookout. There is a difference in violent threats just as there is a difference in killing someone in a moment of passion and kicking someone's head like a football when they are down. It is unspeakablely horrible and needs to be taken very seriously.
