Why would ANYBODY want to contribute ANYTHING to ANY FOUNDATON if they are led to believe that the backbone of the organization consists of lazy faculty members?

The fantasy espoused by Thames supporters (most recently by Toy McLaughlin) is that there are lots of good worker bees who are being led astray by a few bad worker bees. The bad bees are the vocal, radical leftist, possibly near-criminal, nabobs of negativity, who -- one presumes -- are posters on this board.
Of course, this is nonsense. For one thing, the bad bees would have to be working their little bee butts off just to keep the good bees in line, putting to the lie the whole theory of how lazy the bad bees are. It also ignores the overwhelming evidence that SFT is uniformly loathed by approximately 90% of all of the worker bees.
McLaughlin wants contributors, but he wants to get rid of all the bad bees that he and his friends find so easy to identify.
There are other foundations at which you or anyone else could set up what is called a "donor advised fund." Using that tool, you the donor could specify where you wanted the income from "your" fund to be spent. The Hattiesburg foundation could administer such a fund, if you are not discouraged by the current board makeup.

ram, you seem to be saying that there is more than one way to skin a feral cat. I think I would feel more comfortable using the group you mention than a private foundation all-too-loosely attached to the university. I can't quite put my paws on it but there is something about the university foundation I don't quite understand. I'm not saying that I smell a rat, but I am very suspicious. Your comments were enlightening.

My apologies, Salesperson. I did see it, and I have been mulling it over. I do know a bit, but my sources could be identified and criticized if I am explicit. I have been trying to figure out a way to paint a picture without a point of view. Kind of tough; I am no Picasso.
For now, all I can say is that the move to a "national money manager" seems to have more to do with ignorance and delusions of grandeur than with any sort of malfeasance. Patience, please.
Donors establishing funds with the Foundation achieve a number of special and personally rewarding benefits. Establishing a fund assures permanent stewardship, efficient administration, and the opportunity for donors to remain active participants in their philanthropy.
Foundation Advantages
The Foundation allows charitable organizations, including churches, to develop endowments without the necessity to create their own foundations. It also provides individuals with a process to create donor-advised accounts, which is similar to establishing an individual private foundation.
Once the fund is established, donors can enjoy their philanthropy without administrative concerns. The Foundation handles investments, grant paperwork, government reporting, accounting, and foundation audits.
Tax Considerations
There are attractive financial incentives for creating a fund at the Greater Hattiesburg Community Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity, which gives donors the maximum tax deductibility on contributed assets.

Hmmm... Bankers, attorneys, real estate agents, a CPA & few university admin types... yeah, that pretty much sums up the economy of Hattiesburg. Not a single representative from one of the dozens of polymer-related industries we are told clutter the economic landscape of Forrest County. I'm shocked.
