The following was posted recently on EagleTalk. The chorus of "amen, brother" below it was deafening.
I want to say how much I resent the two guys in my thread below....... Reply
that took a thread about the Raines kid and tried to change it to an anti Thames thread. Guys, this board is about USM sports. Take your petty and one sided little picayune gossip to the faculty lounge or somewhere where it will be appreciated.
Dr. Thames ran a couple of professors off that probably deserved some jail time. Did you notice how quickly that situation died down once it went before the judge?
He has also committed the cardinal sin of asking the professors to work a full work day. There just isn't anymore to it than that.
I have talked with many professors on campus and you can easily tell the difference between the Thames supporters and the Thames detractors. The Thames detractors are consistenly lazy, gossipy, and self centered.
The Thames supporters are consistently hard working, open minded, and dedicated to either their research or to educating the students.
I don't know where you clowns come up with some of this unfounded crap, but I'm good and damned tired of it. If you keep up this vicious line of unsubstaniated gossip, I'm going to start attacking your unfounded bull **** with great venom. You'd better do your homework before you start throwing your crap against this wall. I'm sick and tired of you do nothing idiots who continually try to tear everything down.
We have a great university, and the only thing wrong with it right now is that idiots like you think you can run your mouths about anybody you choose with total impunity. Not any more. This crap has to stop.
All you have to do is to come on the campus, get involved and learn first hand what is going on under the Thames administration. We have more construction going on than ever and it's just starting.
We have over 16,000 students on our campuses, and we're headed towards an enrollment of over 20,000 in the near future.
We've won the battle to be the university of the gulf coast.
Our honors college has quadrupled in size and the graduation rate has climbed to almost 100 per cent.
Polymer Engineering is one of the tops in the world, and we are developing a world class medical facility on the coast.
Our athletic facilities are rapidly becoming updated and attractive, and we are graduating athletes at a rate greater than the rate for students in general.
We maintain our Carnegie rating as one of the top academic instituions in the country.
Our fine arts programs are among the tops in the world and the USM Symphony is possibly the best College Symphony Orchestra in the country. The new dance and theatre building is a jewel and one of the best facilities in the country.
I could go on an on, but it wouldn't do any good with negative little pip squeaks like you. Just don't come on these boards running down our school or its administration. We have a lot to be proud of, and you're not going to detract from it.

Hey...it's a niche! USM can become known for giving parolees and felons who have served their time educational opportunities. Aren't you starting a forensic science program too? You can teach them how to NOT get caught in the future!

This poster is NOT, I don't think, the president of the Foundation, he is, as I posted on another thread: Inverness Assett Management – Robert McLaughlin - Birmingham, AL. He lives in Birmingham, not Hattiesburg.

I'll give him a break when he stops promulgating slander on two distinguished former USM faculty members. Put that in your corncob pipe and smoke it, Col. Nat!

Truth, you need to lighten up!! Can't you determine humor(I guess I should have elaborated on the C/L frontpage article "Convicted Felon says he will play for USM" not too flattering)
Maybe Colonel Nat was before your time?? Golden Eagles=Southerns Colonel Nat=Seymore

Who is it that you think lives in Hattiesburg?
Robert McLaughlin AKA Insomnia Eagle lives in Birmingham according to his bio on EagleTalk.
Robert "Toy" McLaughlin, of Inverness Asset Management also lives in Birmingham, according to information provided by the USM Foundation.

See my reply on the other thread - you are confusing the Athletic Foundation with the USM Foundation - two very different foundations with different goals and approaches.
On Friday morning, October 8, I met with the following individuals:
•Bob Pierce, director of the Alumni Association, • Rex Kelly, president of the Alumni Association •Tim Ryan, director of The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation •Toy McLaughlin, president of The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation • Richard Giannini, director of Athletics •Mickey Hudson, president of the Southern Miss Athletic Foundation
Mea Culpa! I see there is indeed a board of directors for the Foundation with a president and that McLaughlin is indeed president of THE USM Foundation. Wow. Screw the Foundation then! And my apologies to those posters who I disputed and to the Athletic Foundation.

I know who Col. Nat is...still don't understand what that has to do w/your post. Sorry, I don't see anything funny about a post that slanders two innocent people. Help me out if I've misunderstood you, Natty Boy.
I read Col. Nat's original post as ironic, not genuinely seeking sympathy for the devil, but drawing attention to the negative that will be splattered across the Clarion Ledger.
Be that as it may, how will this play out if the IHL board members recognize that the President of the freaking Foundation that is intended to support the university takes such an openly hostile position with respect to the faculty?
Maybe Mr. McLaughlin should hear these words: "It is our place and, we believe, our responsibility to observe that the heart of any university is its faculty _ that goes without saying."
This misinformation is purportedly coming from the President of the USM Foundation, Robert McLaughlin?
This is the pervasive aspect of the USM situation that academics on the outside simply cannot believe. Foot Soldier's post was very astute. The myopic view and delusions of grandeur of the Thames' supporters have them buying his lies and, worse yet, spreading them.
I am in such shock that this anti-faculty post appears to be from the Foundation President. It ranks right up there with IHL Board President Roy Klumb stating on the talk show last spring that Shelby Thames was put in the president's office to clean house.

Yes, Miles Long, things get amazinger and amazinger. They also get bizarrer and bizarrer and outrageouser and outrageouser. During the period surrounding the amazing, bizarre, and outrageous attempt to fire Professors Stringer and Glamser, wasn't mention made of alleged "criminal" behavior? And now someone refers to "a couple of professors . . . that probably deserved some jail time." Has the university declared war on its faculty? And, by the way, does the "second chance" policy that evidently pertains to athletic recruiting at USM also pertain to faculty members, or does a different standard exist?

Since you know about Colonel Nat, look back to the 60's and 70's and the football team's the Southerners fielded.
The post slandered more than the two profs.....
Did you read this mornings C/L?
The poster (as i read) was talking about all the good things happening at USM, then my comments were pointed to the negative C/L front page article.
In the future I will try to treat any mention of G&S with more respect

Can anyone reveal what the duties of the president of the USM Foundation are? By whom is he appointed, to whom is he responsible, by whom can he be removed, etc.?
It isn't entirely clear to me from this thread, but have we determined that the president of the Foundation made the comments on EagleTalk? If so, I am astonished; whoever made the remarks is apparently competing for the annual Roy Klumb award for public stupidity. If this bile did indeed come from the president of the USM Foundation, USM is in even worse shape than I had imagined.
The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves as a fiduciary of all private funds donated to The University of Southern Mississippi. Administered by a volunteer board of directors, the Foundation manages and invests these private funds in accordance with reasonable and prudent management and investment procedures.
Formed in 1959 to govern the fundraising efforts of a loyal group of alumni, the Foundation first operated under the management of the Alumni Association. In 1987, the Articles of Incorporation were drafted and approved, setting up a separate corporation for the University of Southern Mississippi Foundation. Bylaws were soon drafted and approved. Since 1988, an elected 39-member board of directors has governed the corporation.

Can anyone give us a direct link to the thread on Eagletalk where McLaughlin's partisan diatribe appears?
I'm planning to quote from it in my next blog entry.
Obviously, any president of USM who replaces Thames is going to want to replace McLaughlin as president of the USM Foundation right away.
But then it could just be that McLaughlin is smart enough to realize that no one but Shelby Thames would ever entrust him with his current responsibilities.
