LARES PRESENTS AT SOUTHERN MISS CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL
HATTIESBURG -- JAMEELA LARES, associate professor of English at The University of Southern Mississippi, presented a program at the 38th annual Southern Miss Children’s Book Festival at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center titled “Harry Potter and Christianity.” In her presentation, Lares contended that the real conflict in the Harry Potter books is not the devil, as some believe, but rather the much more common temptations of the world, especially money and social status, and that therefore the Harry Potter books teach important moral lessons. Lares, who teaches both Children's Literature and Literary Study of the Bible at Southern Miss, shared her passion for the Harry Potter series with participants at the festival, which features top children's authors and illustrators.
Thanks for posting this, GH. My talk was one of the concurrent hour-long "workshops" last Friday. Let me just plug the annual Children's Book Festival put on by USM's library school. It brings an astonishing number of top authors and illustrators to Hattiesburg for a 3-day feast of children's books, talks, presentations, and new friends. One big event is the presentation of a minted silver medal to a top performer in the field. This year's medalist was Kevin Henkes; past medalists have included Maurice Sendak, Madeline L'Engle, Virginia Hamilton, and Lois Lowry. It's one thing that USM does that is truly world class--I was honored to be included. For more information see http://www-dept.usm.edu/~slis/bookfest.htm.

Toot, toot!"
I know, Annie. I have a picture of him on my wall at home, right next to my pictures of Bill Clinton, the members of Duran Duran, and the Virgin Mary. Saint David! Give that man a raise! 51 in the house!
Merv, why can't you be more like David??? Look at me when I'm talking to you!

In past years, info was sent to the HA in advance about the Festival, announcements placed in professional journals, the CBF website would be highlighted on the USM opening webpage and on the electronic message board on Hardy Street. Not sure if the Mader Machine did any of the standard PR for the Festival this year. I kinda doubt it.
Thanks, Mum. That's what I thought. Another tragic downside to this mess under the Thames administration is that those benefits of living in a college town, things worthy of celebration and bringing the community together, seem to be ignored in a PR battle aimed only at saving Shelby's a$$.

I have a picture of David on the wall next to my cherished poster of a bare-chested Eric Estrada...Toot, toot!
