Thames says: "But it is irresponsible on the part of educated people to make those untruthful comments without making any effort to get the facts, and that hurts our institution." Since when does he care about the truth?

Uh...would this also apply to accusing faculty members of illegal activities without evidence?
“If I'm running people off from the university, I'm running them out of my own department,” he [Thames] said.
So, who are the faculty members leaving Polymer Science in droves? As far as I know, only one (Jerry Mattson) has left. Are there 6 depts. in CoST without chairs? I think not.

"Other retiring faculty members, such as psychology professor Lillian Range, credit financial reasons rather than the Thames administration for having a part in their decision to leave."

I wish this could've been pointed out in the article itself. The accompanying editorial did mention the lack of chairs in CoAL at least.

Get your fact straight, Shelboo."
Word in the polymer palace is that everyone is happy over there BECAUSE he's out of their building and in the Dome!!!!!
"USM President Shelby F. Thames said the increase is because of the escalated rate of faculty and staff retirements.
“In the 1970s and '80s, we had very good appropriations, and we hired a lot of people at the university. Now, those people are coming into retirement age,” said Thames."
Can anyone find data to support the opposite, that faculty are leaving not really to retire but to go teach at other insititutions?

Babbs list currently has 41 leaving. The Printz provides Babbs list from this board on page 3 of the hard copy, but not the online version. Their list doesn't include Doug Chambers. However, I can't figure how, in the article, they came up with
"Forty-seven USM faculty and staff members are tentatively leaving or have already left the university since August 2004, an increase from 42 who departed the university in the 2003 academic year."
Unless Brittany Brown knows something Babbs doesn't. Maybe she included SFT's administration.
if the list includes faculty and STAFF that are leaving where are all the other staff - people come and go everyday? also, why is Noel Polk on the list? hasn't he been at State for some time now? and football coaches? i'm confused.

Noel Polk left during the current academic year. I'm not sure who else you are referring to. If you have names to add, please let us know.

I'm sure that the Printz got an "official" count from Human Resources, whereas babbs list uses only what people post on this board - that's why Chambers was not listed in the Printz - as others have pointed out, he is not leaving and thus HR would have no paperwork saying that he intends to leave. Now, what the HR list does not specify with any accuracy is WHY people are leaving - that is something that this board does better.
no, that's not what i was really speaking of - i'm confused because the list seems "built"
I mean, why would you include assistant coaches? How about the resignation of our new budget director? this list is far from being comprehensive - or are we looking for a presupposed finding?

I checked with Brittany Brown who wrote the story. The 47 listed as leaving on the first line is an error. They thought Babbs list meant 41 leaving and additionally 7 retiring for a total of 48. Now take off Chambers and you get 47. The Printz will correct the error in Tuesday's edition. I suggested she contact Human Resources to get official counts. I don't know if they based the story only on Babbs list because I suspect H.R. would not list names but only numbers.
Isn't it wrong to assert that people who leave for personal reasons are leaving due to Thames administration? In any given year, a number of people leave for reasons such as two faculty members leaving because spouse got better jobs, wanting to return to area where family is, etc. It is also quite odd to have Dvorak on the list since our plan was to get her out of USM! It is suspicious to count her as a loss, don't you think?
Babbs' list has never attempted to give any reason why people are leaving. She simply lists the people who leave, and gives what information is available about their destination. I'm sure it avoids a lot of problems to do it this way.
