Here is a snippet from today's CL about 5 of the 9 players Larry Eustachy expects to sign this year:

Among those expected to sign within the next few days:

  • Point guard Travis Hall of Western Nebraska Community College. The 5-foot-10 Baton Rouge native averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as a sophomore.

  • Guard Courtney Beasley of Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine. The 6-3 Huntsville, Ala., native helped Bridgton to a 30-6 record and the school's first-ever New England academy championship.

  • Point guard Kyle LaMonte of Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College. The 6-3 Davenport, Iowa, native averaged 9.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game last season for 25-9 Marshalltown.

  • Forward David Cornwell of Los Angeles City College. The 6-8 Louisville native played with USM guard Rashaad Carruth during the 2003-04 season at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to LACC. He averged 16 points and six rebounds a game last season.

  • Center Donatas Visockis of Baltimore Cardinal Gibbons High.

The 6-10 Visockis averaged 11 points and seven rebounds in his only season at the Baltimore powerhouse. The native Lithuanian played as a junior for national power Oak Hill Academy.

  • So, he's recruiting out of Maryland, Maine, California, Iowa and Nebraska.  Does anyone else thing something very fishy is going on here?  Or, are we at the C-P Report the only ones skeptical about LE and the program he's "building"?

2 JUCO kids, 2 hs kids from places where they get "recruited" and "paid" to play, etc.  These are in addition to the "hot shot" from Milwaukee who signed with USM back in November without ever having been to Hattiesburg.  Is LE Father Flanigan?  I bet even Tarkanian is impressed when he sees this list of signees.

On a happy not, Jasper Johnson has transfered to Delta State.  Let's wish him all the best; he deserves it.

It is a different approach compared to Turk and Green.  I don't know if it is bad or not.  I think LE wants to get as many "gamers" as he can as quickly as he can and the local talent may not be as plentiful.  Plus, one of the Juco players is from Baton Rouge and the prep school player is from Huntsville.  We recruit those areas normally anyway.  Time will tell if it is a bad approach.

No one is saying it's a bad approach in terms of winning ball games.  Maybe, maybe not.  It does have the appearance of open wallets and free gifts.  I bet some will be really interested in examining the players' cars when they all get to campus.  These recruits have the same backgrounds as those that would've signed with Fresno State a few years.  I wonder if the fact that the Nic Nolte movie "Blue Chips" was rerun on tv the other day is any coincidence?

We may have to contact the NCAA.

Just came across the wire --- the hot shot Milwaukee baller who signed back in November will not enroll at USM.  He dropped out of high school a few weeks back.  Another straw.

We will be meeting later this morning to vote on contacting the NCAA.

I may not particularly like this approach, but I wouldn't insinuate that money or gifts were exchanged simply because we have signed a couple of JUCO and prep school players.  Besides, even if something of that nature did happen, it would have been orchestrated by boosters of another institution since they would have been placed in JUCO or prep schools 1-2 years ago.  I'm not against being critical of our university when appropriate, but making such wild accusations or statements with no evidence at all is out of line.
