ah, Invictus, thanks for a blast from my past! What a typically Austin situation this is--the heady mixture of libertarianism, retrograde "old-boyness," and just plain wacko. Who cares whether Kinky's real (as I presume he is--it's too good for fiction) or a hoax?

can't wait to see what Molly Ivins has to say about this!

NO QUARTER--no Kinky?

Sure he's real -- as real as any of us.  Here's a link to some of his books at Amazon:

He's also buds with Don Imus:

Anybody who's not heard of Kinky Friedman hasn't had a Southern liberal arts education

Very "liberal." But while we often associate Mr. Friedman with being politically incorrect, lewd & crude (how does a pervert with a hare-lip say "waitress" & Dallas?), here are a couple of another sides to his truly complex personality.

(The first link is to a Google cache, because Texas monthly has the original behind bars, um, paid registration)

Kinky speaks out for the Girl Scouts

Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch

In the (real) Peace Corps, he was called "The Wild Man from Borneo." In the Rolling Thunder Revue, he was "the Original Wooly Bully from Austin."
