WHOA! That is an amazing list; thanks for posting it. I guess one of Shelby's claims to fame will now be that he is helping to boost employment offers in the local economy.

To be fair, I'm not sure what conclusions can be drawn from the list of approximately 85 openings at USM. For example, the Ole Miss site currently lists about 75 openings and the Mississippi State site lists approximately 150. JSU only lists about 35, and Hinds Community College lists only 6.
I checked Hinds because the last time I saw figures, it trailed only USM and MSU in student enrollment.
Perhaps I am overlooking something that is obvious to others.

Maybe that State and Ole Miss are adding faculty to expanding programs while USM is just trying to replace GOOD faculty that have left for greener pastures and keep existing programs running???????

How about this:
5 chair positions open...all in COAL (we also know that English and History will be losing chairs this year).
Director of Mass Comm and Journalism--open
44 Assistant/Associate professor postions--open (I have never seen this many faculty positions open at one time at USM--it's unprecedented).
This kind of news needs to be brought to the attention of the local media....this is evidence of the exodus that was predicted last year after the Glamser/Stringer debacle.
Also, I see they still have that HVAC listing from July. They need to get real about the salary. Additionally, I see that the University proofreader job is listed as a grade 11, but it should be a grade 12 at least. Both of these postings are a joke. One of the cost-cutting methods that can happen is that when positions (I'm talking about staff of course) are vacated, they get lowered a level before a new person is hired. Sneaky.

Just as a point of correction, Hinds is the second-largest community college in the state. And that community college is currently showing 5 job openings.

Thanks for the update. It was in the nature of a joke that I heard the question asked, "Can you name Mississippi's three largest Institutions of Higher Learning?" Of course, the assumption is the "Big Three": MSU, USM, and UM (in no particular order, don't you know). Apparently, UM may have been passed by at least two community colleges.
As I mentioned the other day though, Ole Miss is making lemonade and laying claim to the small campus feel that they are able to maintain by holding their enrollment to manageable levels.
Which is what good universities do. Ole Miss has the idea that they will be what they want to be -- not what anyone else wants. The problem we have is that nobody listens to what USM wants to be. Thames speaks for all.
Maybe USM should just accept its fate as a degree mill and fourth place behind Jackson State in terms of quality.
