Today is the anniversary of Shelby Thames changing the locks of and attempting to terminate two senior, tenured faculty members. This was in retaliation for AAUP exposing the enrollment scam in the fall and investigating the credentials of a university vice president. The Faculty Senate responded strongly under the able leadership of Myron Henry. This resulted in the first vote of no confidence (40-0) for a president in USM history. A few days later an anti Thames student rally was attended by over a thousand students. A vote of no confidence was also undertaken by the general faculty that week with over 90% voting no confidence.

Within a few months the three members of the "Kentucky Mafia" central to these incidents were no longer in their positions, and two were no longer employed by the university. The university attorney returned to his normal duties, and the previous Director of Human Resources was restored to his position.

As the result of a hearing and arbitration the two faculty members agreed to having no duties at the university in return for being compensated for the next two years. The settlement was approved by the IHL. It was at these hearings that the faculty learned of a major secret email monitoring program conducted by the administration which included the editor of the Student Printz, the advisor of the Student Printz, the president of the Faculty Senate, the president of the AAUP chapter and other faculty members.

Thanks for the reminder! That was a dark day, indeed. I'm grateful that even through that ordeal, you and Gary maintained your dignity and your faith.

Greetings Frank,

It may or may not be apparent (at least from how quiet this board has become) that very many people remember this day.  It changed the lives of more people than Gary and Frank--many, many people who are no longer at USM, including myself and my husband.  The summer before last I went to an AAUP summer institute in Reno, Nevada, and met people from all over the country, from Ohio to Connecticut, who knew about the firings in Hattiesburg.  If I've learned anything from the Thames era, it's that we all must continue working to make academia a place where such things do not happen.  I'm sure many of us who have gone on to other institutions have taken that knowledge with us. And for that, you have our thanks.

My best wishes to all of you who lived through it.  No quarter.

Marian Wilson Kimber
President, American Association of University Professors, The University of Iowa Chapter

Addutionally,  Professor Glamser has taught at both Tulane and at USM since that date.   And those who left?   Most have continued to have distinguished careers, including Dr. Wilson-Kimber, who is now tenured at the University of Iow.

Hi Frank,
It's hard to believe it's been that long.  But when you are retired,  like me, everyday is a Saturday.   smile  One reason it doesn't seem so long ago is because I'm reminded of it everyday when I pass 'The Garden", the commercialization park on Classic Drive.  I sure do miss old Van Hook Golf Course.  cry

I'm proud to have taken part in that Senate vote.  I hear things are very boring on the Senate these days debating things like parking.   laughing.gif
