Thank you, Babbs, for the work you do in keeping up this list!

I notice that there seems to be a smaller percentage of departures due to retirement, at least so far. Is the silent majority voicing their opinion of Thames?

I have asked this before many weeks ago and was told to mind my own business, but: why is Chambers on this list?  He is not leaving.  I urge you again to call or email him and ask him.  Inaccuracy on this list does us little good.

When considering the numbers who have left to take positions and those who have retired, we need to keep in mind that a number who are on the list and have gone to another university did indeed RETIRE from the state system because they had more than 25 years in this system and were not close to age 60. They will be earning salaries at their new institutions and will be drawing retirement from the state system for life (the thirteenth month check is wonderful). Also, some who are listed as retired did so only in order to escape "the evil force" at USM and were very thankful to be able to do so. At least some of those on the retired list did not do so just to sit in the front porch swing.

My friend, you must realize that this is the USM faculty. We report everything negative about USM.Whether or not it is true is unimportant.

I guess I wasn't there long enough to warrant being on the list of departures. I sent is a request to be put on the list several weeks ago.  I was only at USM less than a year.

I'm glad I managed to move on to other things, but I still hope USM works out some of its problems.  It has been, is, and can remain a great university.

Mark, list your position and time frame at USM, along with where you are now, and babbs might add your name.

It is important that the list be accurate. I don't understand why department chairs or even a faculty member from the department  doesn't anonymously provide an accurate and updated list of departures from their department.

These names never seem to make the list.

  • Bonnie Gibbs, Alumni Association Communication Manager (Northwestern)
  • Melanie Kemp, Financial Affairs in Marketing and Public Relations (Public school teaching)
  • Hitomi Wince, Administrative Assistance in Marketing and Public Relations (situation pending)
  • Angela Cutrer, Assistant Director for News and Marketing  in Marketing and Public Relations (Tulane, Kaplan University, Arts Institute teaching)

Also, it takes five seconds to find out who "unknown named" person is in Becky Woodrick's office - last I heard it's still

  • Danyel Gipson, Administrative Assistant (downsizing, situation pending)

I suggest that we maintain two departure lists:

I. Full Time Faculty Departures

II. Staff (indicate if staff person taught as an adjunct)

This would help prevent the naysayers from questioning the counts for

number of faculty who have retired and/or gone on to other positions. It also gives a more accurate picture of the number of staff who have left.

I keep reading that 2/3 of the faculty who were here when "The Evil One" came on board have departed or retired. Is this accurate? I personally know of a good many who retired and/or took other positions because of the Thames regime.

A good estimate would be that upwards of 35% of the faculty who were here when Thames was installed in 2002 are no longer on campus. The bulk of that occurred in the past two years since reorganization. In addition to the raw numbers involved, one must consider the experience that has been lost. The current total of assistant professors, instructors, and "other" faculty may be at the highest level in recent memory.

Angela, when did Gibbs, Kemp and Wince leave USM.  Their names are not in the directory, leading me to think they left in a prior year.  Your name is, however, in the current directory.  I have added your departure, and will add theirs if you can confirm dates.

Hitomi left right before Christmas; Gibbs and Kemp last fall. I really miss them, but I'm glad they are doing so well and living with so much happiness.
[Well, Kemp was here all weekend at my house in Gulfport, so I don't miss her so much. We were working on lesson plans and such. Fun fun]

Thanks so much for asking.

Angie
