You're wasting your breath. There's blood in the water and the COB sharks are attacking so all you can do is push your chair back and let nature take its course. DePree will survive it. He'll probably remain onboard but there are a number of other respected upper tier universities where he'd be extended a warm welcome.

Sure, you are one of one. Thank you for feeling sorry for us. Sometimes we feel sorry for us too.

If you are a moral leader and you think DePree is wrong, why don't you try leading by example. It seems to me that you have a great deal of hate in your heart. I found that church and prayer helps me deal with it.

My husband and I pray for you often, "are you nuts, et al." You will be in my prayers tonight that you may let the power of the holy ghost cleanse you of you anger towards all administrators and colleagues and give you peace. love you

Thanks for the comment. You're right. Remind me to stay out of the business school. These people are dangerous.

Oh the pious....Annie "not Goose, Gander, or Moral Leader" Oakley

Why do you think the COB has more problems than other colleges? (assuming this is the case ... it's apparently at least the perception) What's going on over there that is not happening in other colleges?

Im not in COB, but have you been reading this thread? That should answer your question.
Annie and Gander, maybe we need to form a ladies prayer group for the lost soul(s) in the College of Business. If those unhappy individuals in COB could know the peace we have and live with daily, it would be a warmer and kinder place. Will you pray for them in your devotional as my family plans to does? I must go an pick up the kids so I am out of here. God's peace be with you.

The Ladies Missionary Society prays for USM employees at its meetings every week.

I hate to see religion misused with this kind of sarcasm and insincerity. I do find it sad that many attack everything and everyone with whom they disagree. On this board, I've seen students attacked, faculty attacked, and yes even administrators and colleagues attacked for disagreeing. A word of support for Shelby and Co. brings a torrent of attacks. Nobody wants to see Shelby gone more than me, but sometimes I wonder about how we are going about it.
Please don't equate anything that happens on COB-related threads to the feelings and postings of the other regular posters on this board. And I agree with you that this "religious" turn this thread has taken is very unpleasant. Most of us have stopped responding to the craziness that crops up whenever COB issues show up on this board, because you cannot qualify any statement, try to see anyone's point, agree with anything, disagree with anything, or hardly even breathe in their general vicinity without being savagely attacked. Many of us wish they would set up their own board, as their issues seem to be so unique and so much worse than everyone else's, and none of us are qualified to comment on them.
The only difference between faculty at COB and other colleges is their politics and view of the world. Since diversity is an important component of the university culture, I would assume that these stated differences would be viewed as positive. As far as the feelings about deans, we seldom like the current dean, they only seem better once they have been replaced. The exception to that seems to be the liberal arts dean who has drawn the criticism of many liberal arts faculty. I will admit that liberal arts faculty are less vitriolic in their criticism, but I detect some heavy negative emotion behind the comments. If he were my dean, I would likely speak much more harshly than most liberal arts faculty have in the past.
I don't like what some of the deans have done. But then I realize how unnatural it must be working in such a f**ked up administration and wonder if I even know what these men really stand for. Some keep suggesting people are working behind the scenes on our major problem. I guess when it's all over we may find out who were the good guys , if anyone was a "good guy".
Salaries are a function of the market for faculty. Salaries for all disciplines have the same variance across the major universities and USM keeps pace at about 85%, give or take, of the national average. No college at USM is paying the market salaries that are paid at state schools in the Midwest, Northeast, West Coast or even SEC Universities. USM competes with other universities for faculty and pay the salaries that the market demands. Comparing salaries across disciplines is meaningless.

Cossack,
I think the poster was Shelby himself, because it's obvious that Shelby doesn't understand markets, either.
Stevie, although you and the deans haven’t been able to bring yourselves to help our students reason through the WSJAPP case, yet, maybe you’ll find enough concern to help a colleague, Annie Oakley. Your psychology, org theory background may be just the skills to help him/her cope with his/her rage and hatred for people who choose to defend themselves against dog attacks. I have experience with men who have come apart under stress. With your academic background and my practical experience, we can help her/him. If I remember correctly, you owned, maybe still own, a chocolate Lab. Bring it with you. It may help Annie to see me with a friendly dog. In fact, I may know your dog. A chocolate Lab used to run with me in Canebrake. (It was one among several that ran with me from time to time.) At the end of our run, I patted and fed the fine pooch. To the best of my knowledge, it was the only chocolate Lab at Canebrake. I knew most of the dogs at Canebrake, some of their owners were responsible, some were not. During my forty-five years of running, I have come into contact with hundreds of dogs. Some ran with me-like the chocolate Lab; some chased me and stopped when I stopped and stomped my foot at them. Three followed through with their attacks and did not stop. I lost two out of those three attacks. The fully-grown chocolate Lab I referred to above was different from the fully-grown Lab that its owner was exciting during a hunting/training routine that I accidentally came upon at Canebrake on a quiet and beautiful Saturday morning. It attacked me and did not stop. Its owner just stood there and watched his dog attack me. Who in his right mind would be exciting a fully-grown dog in a hunting/training routine in a gated neighborhood like Canebrake? A gated community! Well, you’ll have to ask its owner, Dr. Coltharp.
Annie needs to get her facts straight and come to grips with her hatred. Let me recommend that you, your Lab, Anne, Moral Leader, Dean Doty, and me get together to discuss these issues. As a matter of fact, bring Dr. Coltharp with you. He should have his say, too. We can examine the court evidence that showed that he misrepresented the facts in Justice Court/Traffic Court (the judge had a GED/high school equivalency degree). Dr. Coltharp can present his facts again, but be aware that he quickly withdrew charges against me when he was faced with having to confront the evidence in a real court, Circuit Court (the judge had a law degree). Annie has the same trouble getting her facts straight and controlling her emotions. We can help her/him, if of course, s/he is interested in the facts at all and getting help. When you think about it, this is not much different from you and Dean Doty ignoring the concerns expressed by our students in the WSJAPP case. The facts just don’t seem to matter, right? Well, I haven’t given up on you or the dean.
We can also discuss the changes in CoB when I’m dean. Of course, unlike our current and past deans, I’ll publish everything we’ll talk about. What you see is what you get: open, straightforward, direct. I would not sneak around, clandestinely telling an assistant professor Dean Doty is a dirty pig for expressing his views. When I’m dean, there’ll be no cowardly behind the scenes misconduct.
Since I don't post on the AAUP website because I don't believe in hiding behind a made up name, let me genuinely offer to meet with you, Annie, Moral Leader, Dean Doty or any one else. You used to like beer. I enjoy a cold beer from time to time. We could met and talk through your concerns. Open, direct, straightforward. What do you say? While I await your response, let’s continue with the WSJAPP case.
Stevie, as you know, our students would welcome your and the deans’ discussion to the WSJAPP case. My Managerial Accounting students just started the case. My Cost Accounting students just finished the case. I’ll present their views in future weeks. This week, I’ll continue with last semester’s student comments. This week’s question is:
Did the Deans and Undergraduate Programs Committee members have a conflict of interest when they decided to require students to buy the WSJ?
“The deans and committee members did have a conflict of interest when they made their decision to require students to purchase the WSJ because they knew that the faculty would receive a free subscription to the WSJ and save them $198 a year.”
“The dean failed in honesty and in integrity by persuading the faculty to make a purchase that may or may not be in the best interest of the faculty and the students.”
“They did have a conflict of interests because they got it for free.”
“Yes, if they are receiving the free WSJ then it is a gain for them and would then in return be to their interest to require students to purchase the WSJ.”
“There could be a conflict of interest in that the faculty is getting a free subscription. This free subscription could be the reason that the Committee decided to make students purchase the WSJ.”
“Yes, getting a free WSJ is in the interest of the dean and faculty because it is something they would probably pay to read anyway and now we are paying for it for them.”
The answers from other students were basically the same. I’ll provide all of the comments on request.

I'm beginning to see why Depree was found to be mentally ill after he shot the dog. Does this guy really think he can be a dean. Nobody in the COB respects him.
