Southern Miss students unveiled their plans Wednesday to beautify a "concrete jungle" at the university.
The area where all four science buildings meet will be redesigned so that each building will open to a courtyard for students. The parking spaces will be removed and the concrete and asphalt torn up to accommodate new foliage.
Architectural design students came up with the design.
USM President Shelby Thames says it's part of a plan to eventually turn the campus into a more family-oriented environment.
"The ultimate plan is to continue to improve our facilities, whether they're in the classroom, the athletic fields, or just places for students to gather to build a sense of camaraderie — a sense of family so that rather than leave campus, they can stay here in Hattiesburg and say, 'Well, I have things that I can do this weekend.' That builds family, that builds tradition," Thames says.
The beautification of the science quad will be completed by next fall.

I'm glad Shelboo is all about beautifying the campus...apparently, he's looking to make USM a beautiful shell of its former self (faculty all gone, students all virtual).
This story sounds like the return of David Anderson's plan (he was the campus architect for Physical Plant before leaving some time ago) for 'campus beautification.' It involved tearing down both buildings between Walker Science and the Commons, to make a greenspace. If you look at the renovation of the former "fifties-vintage cheap motel" called Walker, notice that the newly-constructed "front" facade actually faces the SIDE of the building next to it.
If I remember correctly, this "greenspace plan" also called for a fountain to be constructed between the Hub and Commons, with a "big money donor" to be sought to fund it (for naming rights). It was also tied into changing Commons into a "one-stop student services" building, housing Registrar, Financial Aid, and the Bursar.

This is old news. The plans for this were presented to the PUC early last fall. The PR department is just trying to flood the news with "positive" anything to get SFT in a better light.
I hope they get around to beautifying the unsightly building that houses Ed/Psy. That building looks like the architect used an early and rejected Howard Johnson or Motel 6 design.
Let me get this straight: the same SFT who tears down the Pinehaven family campus housing and abandons its overworked, low income tenants to the tender mercies of the local apartment market is the guy who's now raving about making the campus into a more "family friendly" environment? Geeeeee . . .. why do I suddenly want to puke?
Is SFT, like, just a common garden variety petit bourgeois hypocrite, or is he suffering from multiple personality disorder, or was his "family friendly" comment just a projection of the shame he feels for pushing those folks out of Pinehaven to create a sorority haven instead?
Sorry about that last question. I forgot he has no shame.
