Consolidating recent CoB stories
Permalink Closed

This post is meant to consolidate what we know about recent events in the CoB.

Doty: first rumored that he was a finalist at a higher Tier school.  google search by board poster reveals he's in on the UNF Dean post --- but not a higher Tier.  Then, word out that he's a finalist at Florida State.  Both confirmed.  Latest word --- he's in on 3 other yet named positions.  Today, it is found out that one is a Dept Chair job at University of Pittsburgh.  Other 2 not yet known.  One way or another, he looks like a short-timer.

Carter: rumored to be headed to William Carey.  Proves unfounded.

Gunther: rumored candidate for post at UWF.  Not yet confirmed nor eliminated.

Bushardt: stories that he is next chair of Mkt/Mgt.  No final word yet, but weight of evidence pointing in this direction.

Carr: rumored to be next chair of Mkt/Mgt.  Some say impossible, cause not a tenured full.  CoB has long history of both non-fulls and non-tenured chairs, so not enough to fell this rumor.  However, rumor not confirmed --- looks weaker than Bushardt story.

Duhon: rumored to be next chair of Mkt/Mgt.  Newest story on the chair.  Gaining ground, but still lags the Bushardt belief.

Lassen: believed to be the next Dean of CoB.  This story is supported by comments of well-respected people in the CoB.  This could be the real deal.

Prof Heading to Georgia: still no word on who or where on this one.  People still talking at water coolers about it though.  Some believe Georgia State is the place, but don't know who.

Williams: resigns post as chair of mkt/mgt.  Rumored to leave for job at Arkansas.  Reports that he says he stayin in the burg.  More to come I hear.

Please explain how Lassen could even be considered as Dean of CoB? Doesn't he have a law degree and an MBA? Wouldn't he have to have a doctorate in a business field?

When the Dean search for Doty began, someone from ED began the organizational meeting of the search committee by establishing that the credentials did not necessitate having a PhD in a business field.  This person got the committee to stipulate to a J.D., etc.  Little did anyone know then that Lassen would be involved as a candidate.  That is why they established this idea.

With KM as chair of "economic development" what isn't possible?  Lassen is an expert in finance, just ask him.  He can even use monopoly money to prove how one-time money is a great way to finance continuing expenses like salaries.

Lassen was the belle of the ball at today's Founder's celebration.  He's the golden child.

Just another example of what a sad mess the "administration" of this place has become.  Heaven help us all.

Hasn't the golden child seen what happened to his predecessors?

The accrediting agencies of some disciplines use stability or program stability as one of their accreditation criteria. I don't know anything about the criteria of business college accreditation agencies, but if stability is one of those it seems to me that USM business might be a cooked goose.

Lack of stability and length of time in the job for Ty Black and other new CBA admin. types in the mid-80s was one of the reasons given by AACSB when CBA was put on continuing review and it continued for two very long years.

I guess SACS does not use "stability" as a criterion when reviewing the university, no?

Wasn't it David Butler, the IDV program director and assistant professor of geography who nominated Lassen for the CBED Dean position way back when?  Lassen must be close to getting his IDV PhD by now.  He might not be an academic in the traditional sense but then again USM under Thames is not a university in the traditional sense.  This also paves the way for the predicted re-merging of economic development and business.

... in fact, it paves the way for eliminating the AACSB-accredited College of Business and replacing it with a College of Economic Development.

RC, now you hit the nail on the head.   Coming soon to USM the College of Economic Development that will house the technical business programs in accounting, management, marketing, finance, etc. to allow USM to compete against William Carey, U of Phoenix, Antonelli College, Pearl River CC, and Jones CC...................... world class all the way w/o AACSB.

Many view a law degree, rightly or wrongly, as a valuable "tool" for a university administrator, often supplanting the Ph.D.. There have been a number of high profile schools whose governing bodies have selected individuals holding law degrees for high academic posts, including their presidencies.  In fact, you need look no farther than Oxford to see this.  Bobby Khayat at Ole Miss holds a J.D. and a masters in law, but not a Ph.D. (nor an LLD). I'm not defending Lassen, don't even know the guy.  I'm only pointing out that someone with his credentials holding a position in academic administration wouldn't be unprecedented.

Those to whom you refer made great accomplishments before becoming a university president. They didn't just walk in off the street.

Your point is well taken.  However,  I'll  repeat my disclaimer: "I'm not defending Lassen, don't even know the guy."

Great accomplishments may lead to a university presidency?  Oh, now I see.  This must be the reason we ended up with Shelby Thames in the dome.

Regarding the Bushardt story, he has been seen meeting with Doty, then Williams, then Doty, etc. etc. for the past few days.  He has his admin hat on again, so to speak.  All this is really perfect timing and a perfect situation for him.  If he does it, the Interim tag will likely apply.

That's not quite I meant, Fat A. I was referring to former presidents and other statespersons who have only a law degree but become a college president after many years of distinguished public service.

Ike served as president of Columbia University from 1948(?)-51.  According to most historical accounts, he was considered an outstanding shared governance style administrator.

Don't forget that Lassen is currently enrolled in Malone's Economic Development Ph.D. program. Did anyone ever decide whether ED is considered a business discipline, or something else?

When he completes the degree, which could be any minute now, he'll have a vita on the same level as Angie Dvorak, with a J.D. and Ph.D.  We'll have our choice of addressing him as Dean Lassen, or Dr.Dr. Lassen (much like Major Major Major from Heller's Catch-22).

Don't forget . . . when in doubt "Mr." is always proper. Actually, "Mr." is always proper even if you're not in doubt (note that most top universities use "Mr." rather than "Dr." Many use that title in their catalogs, even for Nobel Laureates.

I wonder why Angie became so annoyed when I addressed her as Mr. Dvorak?

This was a change for me when I started working at Vanderbilt....I had been used to calling PhD's "Dr." and no one does that here.  They call them "Professor (Last Name)."  It makes sense, too, since there is a Medical School here, and you don't want to get the "doctors" mixed up!
