Thames was actually there this year . . . everytime Thames spoke you could notice how out-of-breath he was . . . crowd was very small, though it was overcast . . . Thames' first words "I stopped the rain for the afternoon" . . . the keynote speaker was John Cox, who gave a quick history lesson on USM football . . . after Cox spoke Thames said that Cox's speech was evidence that USM is a "world class university" . . . Walt Cain said his faculty mentors are Press, Greene, and Wolf . . . Cain gave a relatively long ode-to-Gregg Lassen, calling him visionary, insightful . . . Krebs echoed the ode-to-Lassen in his own innauguration speech . . . both prezs said USM was fortunate to have Thames at the helm . . . Thames invited the small crowd to partake of the refreshments before Krebs spoke, but was reminded quietly that Krebs needed to address the gathering . . .
Summary: the biggest winner of the day's event was clearly Lassen. . . he was praised from all quarters as innovative, visionary etc. Richard Giannini was referred to as the best AD in the country, receiving praise from almost all speakers --- 2nd biggest winner of the day. Krebs, the man of the hour, was the third biggest winner of the day . . . Thames' comments made John Cox look good --- another winner.
Cain's speech: he explicitly stated that trying to get to 20,000 is a bad idea. He said that the university should concentrate on the quality of the experience for its existing students before worrying about quantity.
People there: Grimes, Lassen, Paul, Giannini, Holloway, Burge, Mader
Not there: Mayor Dupree (I say this because he's has been to all others; guess the LJD thing didn't sit too well with him).

Wow. This is news to me.
There was a focus meeting for Betsy Rowell at 206 Front Street earlier tonight, and from what I have heard it was not for the SFT crowd. There were a couple of downtown lawyers, maybe one banker, and 20-30 active and retired USM faculty and staff.
There must be some other reason that you believe Thames' people are supporting Rowell. Would you mind sharing your perspective with the rest of us?

I was at the meeting tonight at 206 Front Street and met Betsy Rowell for the first time. I was impressed with her grasp of the issues facing Hattiesburg and her solid, concrete plans for dealing with them. She openly addressed the issue of USM and Shelby Thames and it was clear that she felt that he was a devisive factor in the relationship between city and university and that the clandestine meeting was a poor idea.
I think anyone who feels that Rowell supports Thames is mistaken.
My impression of the Founders' Day festivities (as witnessed firsthand) was that USM is an athletic department with some sort of school attached. Thames spoke 95% about athletics and John Cox (sports announcer) gave the "keynote" speech about the history of USM football. I didn't hear anything about academics from Thames, Cox, or anyone else.
I think it's sad when you can't even pay lip service to academics at a university.
