friends,

I've been a little quiet lately because I've been a little distracted. Knowing how fast the grapevine works, I thought I'd give you my news as soon as I was sure--

Some of you know that I had an on-campus interview for head of the English Department at UNC-Greensboro last week. Yesterday the Dean there called: he offered the job and I accepted.

You all are entirely familiar with the negative reasons to leave USM. But some of you may not know that I also have positive reasons for a move to North Carolina: my partner, Tony Harrison, teaches at NC State in Raleigh, and Greensboro is just an hour and a half away. So, though I would have gone to any good job east of the Rockies, this particular job has attractions that go beyond the job itself.

UNC-G seems like the sort of university we used to work at: right in there with the "big dogs" in the state, hiring and retaining excellent faculty and students, and--here's the difference from today's USM--led by administrators who are still scholars, who assume the principles of shared governance, who regard themselves as being in partnership with their faculty. I quote the UNC-G Dean of Arts and Sciences: "Everyone knows that the department chair is a scholar and must continue her research." Well, everyone THERE does . . .

I still have things to say, and I know you do too. Thank you all for your outspokenness, your perseverance (sure hope I spelled that right!)--we'll keep talking.

Alas!  The English department tree has never lost mere leaves, but limbs.  And here is another loss.

Anne, you are a huge loss to the University.  Another crescendo seems to be building this week, with the Doty search, Williams resignation, and now your departure.  Please go in peace and be productive.  I can vouch that, in my field, UNCG has a Top-10 program among all national univs in the South.  They are top notch.


Please leave behind the now famous "Wallace Report" on Dvorak.  We might need it again soon.

Congratulations to you! I know that this is what you wanted. My only regret is that I never had the opportunity to take a class from you while I was at USM, but you always came highly recommended from all of my graduate student friends! USM's loss is UNC-G's gain....absolutely and without a doubt.

Congratulations Anne! I minored in English at UNC-G (way way back!). If Mary Ellis Gibson is still there tell her that her courses made a tremendous impact on me, as I'm sure yours will on future generations of UNC-G students.

Many congratulations. Having lived in NC for about 20 years of my adult life, I can tell you that you are going to love it there. The triad is a wonderful place. And, if you like barbeque, drop down to the Lexington BBQ in Lexington, NC (not far from Greensboro at all) for some wonderful chopped BBQ! Greensboro is a great place to live and I know you will be so happy to be closer to your partner.


I will echo what others have said here: your scholarship and your courage will be missed and USM is diminished as UNC-G is augmented in your move. Congratulations to the English department at UNC-G. I know they will find they have recruited and extraordinary scholar with genuine integrity -- academic as well as personal.

Wow, Anne, that is so great. It makes me sad because the community will miss having you visibly there - but what a great opportunity with such a superb department. I've been friends with Hepsi Roskelly for many, many years and really admire the work of others on faculty there. Hope your new digs and duties won't keep you away from the Board.

Among all the congratulations, it also seems worth mentioning that this departure is just one more example of several facts that have already been well established by previous departures:


(1) USM has excellent faculty


(2) many of these excellent faculty have taken very vocal positions of opposition to Shelby Thames


(3) their vocal opposition to Shelby Thames has not at ALL prevented them from being offered prestigious positions at other (and even "better") universities


(4) apparently upper-level administrators at these other universities admire the public stances these USM faculty have taken, and apparently the new faculty colleagues of the departing USM people admire their stances, too


(5) points 3, 4, and 5 all indicate how out-of-step Shelby Thames and his admirers are with the values of the rest of the national and international academy

Congratulations, Anne. And congratulations UNC-G. I was on the UNC-G psychology faculty for several marvelous years "way way back" (possibly before your time, UNC-G alumna). UNC-G is a great university and it is getting a great person, scholar, and English Department head in Anne Wallace.

Anne Wallace is one of my favorite people on campus. She is certainly the smartest. Someone earlier mentioned their mixed feelings about her depature. I have none. No sorrow. Only my best!
