Grimes named USM provost

I don't understand all I know about the academic hierarchy, but this article reads as if Exline has positioned herself to be Grimes' superior. She's standing next to the Prez, saying "we" and being the one making the announcement. She doesn't see herself as the interim prez, does she?

"The search for a new provost at the University of Southern Mississippi has ended with interim provost Jay Grimes taking the job permanently, officials at the school said Thursday."

Is the word "permanently" KW's interpretation, or is this a commonly understood fact?  If the latter, I cannot believe that a president could appoint someone permanently to such an important position.  This is astonishing.

Sympathizer, I think it just meant he was no longer interim.

If you are no longer "interim" - then what does that really mean? Exline's use of "we" is also problematic. I'm glad that I didn't pay for a ticket on the Titanic (I'm using "I" thus showing that I am only speaking for myself).

Maybe Shelby is simply rewarding someone who took the public hit for him -- it wouldn't be the first time.

It looks like picking an article apart to the point where youre pulling "we" and "permanently" is just arguing semantics.

I really think you guys are looking deeper into the story than what is actually there.

Confused,

I think it's quite reasonable to read Exline's comments as indicating that she views herself as a member of Thames' inner circle, while Grimes stands outside it.

No Provost is likely to be in Thames' inner circle; the mere presence of a Chief Academic Officer dilutes Thames' control of the the university.

The Associate Provost is the one in Thames' inner circle. Remember, she was appointed to the post by SFT. The cross-training provosts had no say in that appointment.

It's said that the Queen is one of the most important pieces on the chess board.  Funny, we have two queens (Exline and Moore) on SFT's chess board.  Which will out do the other to survive?  Which one will be more powerful?  My money's on Exline......

A pawn elevated to a second queen, we must be in the endgame.

I always remember from my chess instructor, that a queen can be sacificed and still win the game.  SFT is not out of the game yet...... and he has a few pawns left too.

You guys quit talking that uppity chess language. I'll bet you play golf and water polo too. Checkers is my game. Takes less thinking than chess.

I thought of you, Bubba, when there was that scandal a few months back about the Checkers Hall of Fame.

Yes, Lessons from Mama, we are family. And I have thought of you often. Welcome back to the board.

Bubba, my Mama told me that if I couldn't say anything nice...well, you know.

No, Exline is just involved in alot of decisions due to SACS issues and her administrative skills.  It is nothing more than that.  When SACS issues are resolved, she likely will leave Southern Miss, from what I hear.  She is committed to fix things but then will look evaluate options.  Our loss.

In the Know,

Are you sure you're not just predicting that Exline is thinking of moving on because Thames may no longer be around to sponsor her?

What are the prospects, in a post-Thames USM, of anyone too closely associated with him holding onto an upper administrative position?

What a difference a day makes...

I wonder whether In the Know will ever return to this board with any further advocacy on behalf of Joan Exline.

My head is still spinning from reading her statement in today's Hat Am that Soc and Psych courses can be taught in area high schools (while USM is under probation, and the deans, the chairs, the departments, the curriculum committees, and the Academic Council haven't been notified....) and it's all OK with SACS.

From the HA, as posted on the Next Stupid Thing thread:

"Cox said deans of the individual colleges are aware of the plans"

How would Cox actually know?

In any event, Elliot Pood has denied hearing about the plan.

Somebody's lying, and there's a reasonable chance Cox was lied to.

No advocacy on my part.  But, I do know that some people are doing their jobs to advance the university and Exline is one of them.  Doesn't matter who is president, she will do the same thing she is doing now.

Exline is not ambitious, according to my sources.  She has thought of moving on ever since her husband died.  She was asked to stay another year to work on community college relationships and accreditation issues.  That was before she found out about SACS problems.  I expect her to announce departure in spring 2006 when all is well with SACs.

Cox is correct.  Deans all know the plan.

When all is well with SACS?

Exline now has her fingerprints on a scheme that will get USM in more trouble with SACS.
