Independent Concern for USM
Permalink Closed

From today's issue in The Independent, by Bob Pittman:

"Largely as the result of the turmoil that has flooded the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi over the past year and a half, the state College Board has changed its rules on accountability for university presidents."

Bob Pittman has done a good job of consistently providing new information about the university in the context of the chronic problems experienced under this administration.  Most of today's article focuses on the revision in Board rules, quotes from Ms. Newton and Dr. Crofts relevant to the revision, and timing of the revision in conjuction with appointment of a new commissioner.  We are reminded, nonetheless, of the suspension and negotiated retirements of two tenured professors, faculty and student demonstrations, multiple votes of no confidence in Shelby Thames, and SACS probation.

Three step instructions for massive kissing of hiny.

1) Pucker up.

3) With rear in full view, proceed with smooching.

You all know my thoughts on Pittman and his rag. I'll just leave it at that. His concern is only to sale newspapers, not promote your cause. By writing the articles he knows anyone with that as their cause will buy his rag.

Lord Vader, read todays Hattiesburg American.  Read the part:

"The meeting, her comments and those by state College Board member Scott Ross prompted questions to Thames Wednesday. But Thames, who said he did not organize the meeting, said there was no truth to talk that the board plans to cut liberal arts studies at Southern Miss.

"Our mission statement is our mission statement," Thames said. "There is no mission from the board of trustees to change our mission that I'm aware of. I'll just tell you that."

Ross said his comments about the universities' greater economic self-reliance through partnerships with private companies were misunderstood.

"We've got to be more entrepreneurial as a university system," Ross said. "That in no way should take away from the liberal arts instruction. I don't see them as being mutually exclusive at all."

Thames distanced the university from the meeting and from Drews' comments."

The quotes by Ross and Drews all originated in that "rag", The Independent.  The Independent is the one who really broke the meat of this story.  Looks to me like good journalism.  You must have a secret agenda.

First off....I dont' have a secret agenda, I just don't like the Independent.
Secondly....If you were a good reporter instead of what seems like a hanger-on or a follower, you might notice that what's found in the Indpednent isn't good journalism. Nine times out of ten they just print press releases or run story after story on their advertisers.

If you people want to help your cause, I would not associate myself with people like the ones who run the Independent. Just throws you in the pot with the rest of the nuts.

Reporter...futher more, don't quote the HA to me. it seems all you do is read the HA or the CL instead of trying to think for youself. Do yourself a favor and come up with your own thoughts and actions. I might beat the dead horse, but at least I can think for myself.

you might well be correct with your assessment of the independent, but if your criteria of running press releases would apply to hattiesburg american and a host of other newspapers

do your math on the american's number of original stores on usm and the "submitted" articles.

public relations departments are in place to issue press releases.

there are obviously several opportunities for enhancement at the independent, but the same can be said about the ny times

"original thoughts"?  all knowledge is based on prior knowledge, so i would be very careful about original thoughts

So you "don't like" the Independent.  That's fine.  I learned a long time ago how to learn from people I can't stand.  If I "like" the source or not has nothing to do with the facts or information I learn.

Secondly....If you were a good reporter instead of what seems like a hanger-on or a follower, you might notice that what's found in the Indpednent isn't good journalism.

I'm not a "reporter".  That is the name I sometimes use on this board.  Your statement is meaningless.   How did you determine that I was a "hanger-on" or a "follower".   And did you intend for me to take that as criticism?  I don't, they were just meaningless words.

Whether The Independent "is" putting out "good" work is what we are discussing so don't beg-the-question.

Who is "associating with The Independent"?   I just read the thing.  You are not making sense, except when you said "I don't like the Independent."

Just throws you in the pot with the rest of the nuts. Reporter...futher more, don't quote the HA to me. it seems all you do is read the HA or the CL instead of trying to think for youself.

Thinking and reading are two different things.  You have to be informed in order for your thinking to correspond to reality.  Are you just making this up as you write?

Do yourself a favor and come up with your own thoughts and actions. I might beat the dead horse, but at least I can think for myself. "

I have no idea how you reasoned, "I don't think for myself".  Lord Vader, you can't think in a vacuum.

Lord Vader, you knocked The Independent.  All I did was point out they were the source for a big story that has been around for several weeks and even ended the PUC meeting yesterday.  You replied with a bunch of meaningless statements about me, my "reporting" and my "not thinking for myself".  All of this from someone who doesn't even know who they are talking about.

I will let the readers on this board determine for themselves which of us is in need of help.

Reporter,

Gloves off....I think you are a smacktard...yes I said it. Will it get me banned from this board, sure. Let's get one thing straight...you are a hanger-on. You and just about everyone on this board are hangers-on to Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer. All you do is quote the HA, CL and other sources out there. If you want something done about USM and all the garbage going on there, then get of your cans and do something. Posting pointless dribble on this forum does nothing but smack of all talk and no action. Quoting articles written in the various newspapers in this state does nothing for your cause. The cause is this, make USM a better place, and all of you are doing nothing to make that dream a reality.
Maybe I am off based, you'll probably think that I am chemcially imbalanced, but I think you are a sad person.

You think for your self and still not make any sense. Your posts suggest that faculty alone can make a place better without any support from the administration. If that is so, fire SFT and hire a laid off K-Mart manager we can go forward and make USM better. Since faculty do not allocate funds and now have little or no input on policy, I am curious as to what faculty can do to make USM better? I suspect that your answer would be to shut up and do what we are told, and if it is wrong it is faculty's fault.

Lord Vader, I will continue to try to communicate with you. What is a smacktard?  Is that meant to be an insult?  I tried to point out to you in my last reply that not liking something or someone is not important to the information. Calling people names is just taking up space.

You and just about everyone on this board are hangers-on to Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer.

How can I be a “hanger-on” to Glamser and Stringer? I’m at USM and they have gone.  What are you trying to say?

We are exchanging information on this board.  (What else can you do on a message bear?)  It is very convenient for posters who check the papers to keep us up to date on the issues.  This fees up our time to work and “change things” at USM.  Example: Yesterday the Provost Search Committee was disbanded after months of wasting there time trying to help get this university back in shape.  We would never know that without communication.  How would Robert Campbell in S.C. learn of this if this board didn’t exist?

The cause is this, make USM a better place, and all of you are doing nothing to make that dream a reality. Maybe I am off based, you'll probably think that I am chemcially imbalanced, but I think you are a sad person. "

I didn't say you were "off based" or "chemcially imbalanced".  I'm working my a$$ off trying to save USM while doing all of my regular duties.  I'm having fun, as SFT says.  Since you have no knowledge of who I am, how (and why) do you say I'm "sad"?

Are you using "code" words that others understand, but I don't. I would love to know if we are from the same planet.

Finally, please state, as clearly as possible, what posters on this board, or faculty, could do to make you happy.  My one guess from you post is stop reading the Independent.  From this post I would guess they should stop posting to this board.  Is there anything else?

Thanks.

In all seriousness, I have no idea what DV wants us to do.  If he could simply explain this (and stop pointing his pinched fingers in the direction of my neck), I for one would be grateful.

What is a smacktard?

Oh dear, it's been too long of a week, because this line sounds like something on a flowery greeting card.  You know, like the ones with the poems that start out, "What is a daughter?" or "What is a friend?"

It has been the most unusual discussion I have ever seen on this board.  I suspect Lord Vader is a left wing, liberal, atheistic, democratic.  Don't you think so?

Lord Vader, that was just a joke.

Remember, I don't believe in "calling names" or using "labels".  It blocks thinking.

You say you will "leave it at that," but you go on and on incessently with glib statements containing nothing of substance. Me thinks you have a personal axe to grind.

Whatever the Independent's shortcomings, it broke the story on the Coca-Cola Cabal/Paving Company Putsch.

If Pittman were making stuff up, Bonnie Drews would have spoken to a bunch of people from other media outlets, indignantly denying that she ever dumped on the liberal arts.

Instead, she refused to return phone calls from reporters.
