Friends of USM and Hostages of the Evil Empire;

Please pardon me for violating the board's rigorous posting guidelines with this decidedly inappropriate personal message.  I'm presently in Mississippi, ensconced in the family compound at a secret location north of Laurel.  Tomorrow I have a lunch engagement near Hattiesburg and some afternoon business at the local state university and technical institute.  Later I plan to make a stop at 206 Front for my daily flavonoid heart medication.

I'm well aware that this is short notice, it's a week night, many of you have evening classes to teach, families to nurture, identities to protect, and that you may be leery of being seen in a public place with an out-of-state subversive and known agitator.  Even so,  for the bold among you who aren't otherwise disposed, I'd enjoy meeting you and placing faces with some of the screen names I've come to know and admire.  I cordially invite you to come on down.  I should arrive no later than 4PM. If nobody shows, I won't be offended.  I plan to be there for a while anyway, doing my part to fuel the local economy.

One last thought---Please don't tell me that 206 Front is now an Aramark operation, or a banned establishment.  I'm going, and that's final.

Slainte,

Austin Eagle

Good question, since I don't know your secret handshake, and the only two regular board posters that I'm sure I know live outside Hattiesburg.  Hmmm.  I'll be the exceptionally distinguished looking elderly gentleman with gray hair and a very sore back (I fell off the roof this afternoon). Seriously, Truth and Invictus know me. Maybe one of them will have a suggestion.  I'll be visiting the English department after lunch, and there are a couple of profs there who know me as well. We'll figure something out before the evening's over.

Mr. Austin Eagle, a word of warning. I don't have Mlle. de Guerre's calendar in front of me, but I think she has an engagement later in the evening. However, this will give her at least an hour or two to focus on you. Please be aware that she has already been in love with the real estate gentleman for at least two weeks, and that is about her limit. So, please be on your toes. Of course her undying affection for Professor Judd is a given, but they are not actually "an item" so you other gentlemen are fair game. However, there are two things which will deflect Mlle. de Guerre -- if you are a married gentleman, she will never, never make any romantic overtures, nor accept any. If you are a gentleman who is, hmmm, not particularly interested in ladies, she will endeavor to be your very good friend and plan shopping and lunch dates with you.
You will recognize Mlle de Guerre by her attitude of joie de vivre, as she calls it -- the joy of life, a fun spirit. Unless I can intervene in time, there may also be feathers. If you run into any difficulties (she may try to stick you for the tab) please call me.

Sincerely,

Hermione Angleterre

I (we) would be there but for the quest to find a previously unknown sister named Ann.  Have a productive meeting in Laurel and an enjoyable social gathering at 206.

Well, isn't life ironic? I'd love to meet you, Austin Eagle, but I will be staying over in Houston tomorrow night before driving up to AUSTIN on Wednesday to find a place to live.

Perhaps we can arrange a meeting in Austin this summer once I am on the ground. Would be good to meet a fellow poster on the board in the Texas Hill Country.

Have a great time at 206! It's one of my favorite places, too!

Austin I am terribly disappointed. I am going downto the Gulf Coast to visit my parents who leave town this week. I'm very bummed.

However -- all my best and please let us know if you do this again -- Normally I'd be there. But this one is simply not flexible.

Best wishes!

AE, looks like it might just be you and Monique at 206 Front...watch out for the feathers!

Too bad I will miss all of the fun...too far for me to drive, unfortunately.

Have fun!

Hermione, Polyonymous, DJ, and Stephen,

All is not lost.  This was a somewhat ill conceived plan, and I didn't expect a huge turnout on  short notice.  Otherwise I'd have asked W.J. Johnson to lend his influence in booking the paving company ballroom.  I appreciate you all taking the time to respond. Be assured there will be other opportunities to meet.  I'm here in Mississippi at least twice a year, and then there's always the coming out party.

Poly, the prospect of locating a lost sister is far more important than attending an impromptu BS session at the local watering hole.  It's a no brainer.

DJ, I'm sorry I won't be around to provide you with Austin housing tips.  Take your time and don't do anything precipitous.  There are many excellent neighborhoods of every imaginable flavor and price range.  Unfortunately, Austin now enjoys the highest housing cost in the south, as well as the highest property taxes and worst traffic jams. Otherwise, it's a delightful place.  I should be home in June and July, but off to Canada in August.  Truth and Invictus both know how to reach me.  Let me know when you're settled in and we'll arrange a proper introduction.

Stephen, don't be bummed. Family comes first, always.  And I'll be back.  May even catch you at JavaWerks some Friday morning.....

And then there's alway Monique.  What can I say?

I hope I didn't overlook anyone.  It's time for my warm milk and nightly inspirational reading from the gospel according to Kinky Friedman,  the next governor of Texas.  I'll see some of you tomorrow evening, and catch the rest of you next time.  Keep up the good fight.

AE

Cher Stephen, please do be most, most careful. The weather is turning quite vicious. But how wonderful to see your Mamma and Papa.

Dear AE, my plans for tomorrow are still quite . . . fluid. We shall see. Hermione is being rather dreary on the subject of apparel again. However, with vicious weather, I may wish to keep the 'Vette in its garage.
And merci, dear friend, for your long acquaintance with us and your many helpful posts. And your Mr. Friedman, is he perhaps a single gentleman??

Evening Truth,

I wasn't clear from Hermione's post whether Monique will actually be able to attend. I hope she does, along with Judge Cooley and W.J. Johnson.  There is one honored guest who's planning to make an appearance, so I'm certain the gathering will be an unqualified success.  Sorry you can't make it.  The drive is prohibitive; with a little prior planning I could have arranged for the USM "Lucky Shelby" aerobus to pick you up in Nashville.  I'll do better next time.

Habitually so.

Given to "French" customs, might I add

Austin Eagle is currently heading toward H'burg on Highway 49. We tend to agree on many things, including Austin music, chili rellenos, the next governor of Texas & (hopefully) the next former president of USM.

Now, I must duck off to peruse my gift from AE -- a Kinky Friedman etiquette book...

I stopped by and said hello to AE and another special friend of the board regulars. Didn't have long to stay, but it was great to meet him -- he has deep roots in the area and strong ties to USM. Safe trip back to Texas, AE.
