Here are some excerpts from an article on page 10:
Southern to Shout its successes
. . . This week, at a rally of some 250 supporters of USM's President Shelby Thames, friends of the president and the University, meeting at a site off campus and closed to the media, decided to wage a campaign to make the community aware of the positive events and assets of the University. Meanwhile, a band of primarily liberal arts professors went off campus to stage a demonstration in front of the office of Dr. Fred Drews, a Thames supporter and former student whose wife, Bonnie Drews, said last week the University must decide whether it will continue as a liberal arts institution or focus on technology. Drews' statement came as a member of the College Board was saying the University must focus on free enterprise and entrepreneurship . . . the meeting of some 250 friends of Thames became a cheerleading session as speakers outlined what they termed as recent advancement of USM. . . Participants received a list of "facts" . . . and they were encouraged to spread the message through the community. . . Mrs. Drews said that faculty members at USM protested her statement to the Independent last week by creating a demonstration in front of her husband's office. Some faculty members who have been patients of the dentist, she said, have advised Dr. Drews they will no longer use his services because they are opposed to his support for the USM President....
I hadn't heard of any "demonstration" by liberal arts faculty anywhere. I'd like to see pictures or verifying facts. I have heard several liberal arts faculty express regrets about their dentist, though.

Weird.
Amy Young"
Is anyone surprised that they are playing fast and loose with the truth? Look at the list of "facts," which would better be called "factoids" meaning something that resembles a fact. In this case, it may walk like a duck and quack like a duck, but it's more like the byproduct of feeding a duck.
The article (and the editorial on the other thread) is real. I don't know if the protest happened or not, but I am holding a copy of The Independent in my hand.
"With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead."
[An RFC is a "request for comments" document commonly published for computer & internet standards. One of my favorites is RFC 1437, which defines the standard MIME type (matter-transport/sentient-life-form) for sending living things via email. Best quote: "With the mail extensions described in this document, however, comes the possibility that duplicate mail delivery will leave a user with, for example, multiple spouses or mothers-in-law." It also uses Dan Quayle's head as an example (nitrous oxide core with solid ferrous shell), a model that might apply to innumerable trolls on this board.]
i have to apologize to this board about my past comments regarding the Independent. i believe i said it was getting its news from this message board, possibly quoting threads and posts. i am wrong--the independent now appears to be making it up.
maybe the quotee in the article has been sniffing too much of the nitrous oxide.

Not that I don't believe you, but is there any way of scanning said article and posting it here?

So that means that you you (a) attended the meeting at the paving company, and (2) spoke with the dentist and/or his wife?
I am finding it very difficult to believe that faculty protested outside of Dr. Drews' dental office. Most faculty don't have the time needed to make protest signs let alone physically parade with signs. Those of us who are geezers and who may have protested for and against various causes during the 60s and 70s have already done our share of carrying signs, chanting, whatever and are more likely to speak out" as we do on this message board or in interviews with the press.
I must admit that what the signs might say could be amusing... and I haven't even sniffed any nitrous oxide!
the story reports that a source said a protest happened sometime last week. like when? does the independent care to ask sources to provide specifics? does the independent try to confirm such statements of fact? his office is next to several other offices and kindercare--did they confirm? did the independent think to ask people in these places?

actually, it says Mrs. Drews said a protest occurred outside her husband's office, doesn't it?
I wrote Kevin a short note lettinghim know about thisreport and indicating it can't be us. He was at the CoAL and AAUP meeitng and I am sure knows how little energy we have left for anything like that -- sheesh, we couldn't even get a group together to go out to the cement plant which would have been ever so much better a target than a dentists office . . .
TARGET --metaphor alert!!!! I only mean it as a location of interest, not as a place to bomb . . . . NO VIOLENCE HERE.
i keep thinking two things about the story. 1. crazy as a road lizard 2. john lovitz's character in saturday night live--"yeah . . . that's the ticket."
