On September 1, 2003, the University of Southern Mississippi ran a paid advertisement in U.S. News & World Report. University spokeswoman Lisa Mader has repeatedly cited this ad as proof that USM was "featured" in USN&WR. The USN&WR "accomplishment" showed up again recently on a list provided at the closed meeting at Warren Paving.
A paid advertisement? Paid for by USM and touting the virtues of USM? I take that with the grain of salt with which I would take a paid advertisement by a car dealer touting the virtures of Ford.

USM was featured in the annual college issue, too. It was listed in the bottom tier of national universities. And you can take that to the bank, PayPalsyWalsy.
Oh, thanks to the Thames administration, USM is nationally recognized ... as an institution in the vanguard of the effort to abolish the "archaic" tenure system, as an institution incapable of meeting minimum regional accreditation standards ...
While shopping for a house today, a realtor told me that Doug Rouse was the one who was railing against the tenure system at the Warren Paving meeting. He supposedly said that he wished he could have tenure in his job so he never had to work again.
I guess Doug's tired of being on the wrong side of that: When you screw up as a physician, you end up giving people like Derrick Nix (no offense to D. Nix) their own version of "tenure." Wonder if Nix will ever get fired from USM's football staff....
Buying a house? I know what you mean. Seems Rouse juiced up a cocktail for Nix that had an adverse effect. Thankfully, DN has a job for life. No one has more invested in that happening than the aforementioned good Dr. Rouse.

Doug has his profession's version of "tenure" & considering what an orthopedist has to pay up front to join SB&J, you can probaby bank on the fact that Doug could go to the house right now, never scope another knee in his life & make three or four times the annual salary of a full tenured professor with 30 years at USM.

I don't know the man, but judging from the educational information about him on the SB&J website I'd say that the USM faculty and the Mississippi taxpayers have treated him pretty darn well:
1971 - 1975 University of Mississippi School of Medicine - Jackson, Mississippi - Degree: Medical Doctor, 1975
1967 - 1971 University of Southern Mississippi - Hattiesburg, Mississippi, 1971
