• It disturbs me that USM is having serious problems since Shelby Thames took over. Now we have local businessmen having private, carefully orchestrated meetings in which you must be invited to attend. I think the future of USM should rest with the faculty and its mission should be educational. Not entrepreneurial or to assist or support business. I'm getting pretty tired of the business-like atmosphere that has taken over USM. It's time for USM's mission statement to be clarified as a teaching institution. A university is to teach, not promote business.
Am I just imagining things, or has the SH begun to evolve in a positive direction? Their recent coverage of the story has been sound and even a bit hard-hitting (as in their report of the Putsch); they have also published at least one anti-Shelby letter recently. I had written them off a year ago, but maybe I need to reconsider my opinion.

Yes, Sympathizer, they had more than one critical letter last week (maybe 3?). I heard that when they published the story about the Grimes-Doty letter fiasco (a week after the H.A.), the reporter that put it out was chastised for putting out something written by Kevin Walters. I think maybe something hit the fan about unprofessional (unethical) actions because of connections between USM and S.H. Ever since then they have been giving a more balance coverage.
