Opinion - Tuesday, June 22, 2004 Faculty should 'get on with job'
I am a graduate of USM. My wife, son and son-in-law are also graduates of USM. My daughter completed most of her work at USM and graduated from the University of California.
I have friends who are professors at USM and I have talked to them all. I understand some of their frustrations.
However, there are two sides to every story, including Dr. Thames' side.
I am personally tired of seeing letters from employees of USM like the one written by professor Joe Parker ("It is wise to think before speaking," June 17). I think the letter was written in a condescending tone to people like me. If professor Parker worked in any other business, he would be dismissed for insubordination.
I urge all professors and employees of the university to get on with the job of educating our students. Like it or not, Dr. Thames is the president of the University of Southern Miss. He is the chief executive officer and, as such, should be in control.
The more I see of letters like the one by Joe Parker, the more I support Dr. Thames.
Well, well, well. It looks like people are finally catching on. Hey CoolD, you missed the other two letters that were published on that day or very close to that day. Look at my other posts that I will be posting soon. They won't be on top for too long though because the trolls keep pushing them off the first page. So you might have to look on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th page. The subject line will say "Repost:"

Fred White, Hattiesburg"
When, oh when, will Mr. White and others of his ilk realize that a university is not a corporation and a university president is not a CEO?
Even if a university president were a CEO, how long do you think he should be allowed to remain "in control" if this resulted in the relentless destruction we are witnessing at USM?
Perhaps Mr. White would not mind hearing from a few USM faculty members about how he ought to be running HIS business?
Fred White, so happy that you are not calling yourself Colonel Frederick D. Whiting III.
Nothing more needs to be commented upon concerning this post.
Fred White - do your homework. You obviously haven't done it very well at all at this point. Next time, comment when you've really looked at the whole situation.
