Reason # 1736: he can become a professional martyr. He can be lionized by the local bidness leaders as a victim of the faculty, and he can collect huge speaking fees all over the country explaining how he was driven out of office by a bunch of crazed professors. I would pay for a ticket if it meant he would go. Please, Shelby: you have a whole new career ahead of you: Successful Polymer Scientist, Failed University President, Hugely Successful Professional Martyr. If you stick around USM, you're stuck in number two (so to speak). It's not too late to start fresh. Life begins at 70!

I will definitely be there!
By the way, I know we sometimes have a lot of fun on this board, but I hope that new readers will understand that the fun is a way of coping with the pain of seeing the lives of good people destroyed and the life of a fine university ruined. If you new readers scratch any of us you will find, not far beneath the occasional surface flippancy, a real desire to discuss seriously how to make USM a better place for EVERYONE, including members of the local community.
