Fall 2003 - USM submits faked enrollment figures to the IHL office, establishing itself temporarily as the largest university in the state.; the numbers are later retracted, attributed to "human error."
Spring 2004 - Thames locks Gary Stringer & Frank Glamser out of their offices & begins termination procedures, resulting in an unprecedented level of bad press for the university.
Summer 2004 - USM drops from Tier 3 to Tier 4 (the lowest level) in the US News & World Report rankings.
Fall 2004 - USM placed on probation with cause by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools. & now runs the risk of losing regional accreditation altogether.
Spring 2005 - Failing to heed the warnings of the SACS consultant, the Provost orders the Dean of the College of Business to have an online MBA program ready fro fall 2005, an action that would certainly have had significant negative repercussions for the SACS probation.
Summer 2005 - ?????
Any single one of the above blunders would have resulted in termination for a "normal" president at a "normal" university with a "normal" governing board. Each of these incidents is an indicator that the University of Southern Mississippi has ineffective, inexperienced & unqualified leadership.
Yes, there are plenty of "good things" happening at USM ... largely in spite of presidential "leadership."
Another achievement...the prez also substantially reduced the amount of email the university servers have to handle as well as the number of phone calls emanating from faculty offices. Gotta be some cost savings here, huh?
* The loss of over 200 faculty members since the Glamser/Stringer affair, a loss rate that is far higher than previous years.
* The loss of many experienced faculty members in Nursing, to the point that the department is in serious jeopardy of going under. If I remember correctly, there are currently no graduate students in the Nursing program now, due to a lack of faculty to accomodate them.
And one more vital fact: All of the "Bad Publicity" about USM has NOT been brought about by actions of the faculty or staff. It has come SOLELY from the actions of SFT and his administration. It may have been faculty or staff that, at times, brought these things to the attention of the media but, after checking their facts, the media reported on the actions of the ADMINISTRATION, not the faculty.

I am in no way defending Thames, but honestly, how many other universities inflate their numbers? I guess the difference is that Thames was stupid enough to inflate them so much that a red flag went up. How could Thames believe that USM would take over UM and MSU in a semester?

It is one thing to "inflate" numbers. It is quite another to create a bogus class, enroll 700 graduate students in it, then drop them all right after the 10-day registration count.

No--he was stupid enough to put out publicity releases and make a REALLY BIG DEAL about USM being the largest university in the state. That was the biggest embarrassment, in my opinion, about that particular mess.

Also remember this was announced on national TV because it occurred right before the big ESPN game. I wonder if it was intentionally hurried to get done for the "big ESPN Game".
