Let's assume that the Putschers have decided that it is time to cut their losses and cut Shelby loose. Who would be acceptable to them as a replacement? Would any of the people acceptable to them also be palatable to anti-Shelby forces? Is there anyone who could realistically unite USM at this point?

I hate to say this - I really do - but I can think of no one else with the ability to unite USM AND the "bidness community":
Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas
Too bad that he's too old to come out of retirement for a second time.
Would there be any point in inviting members of the community to attend a meeting organized by, and featuring members of, the faculty and staff who could try to make the case for how Shelby is ruining USM? This would be a counter to the meeting held tonight, in which a list of Shelby's fiascos would be presented. Would such a meeting be productive or pointless?

Don Cotten was a popular candidate - only not so with those people whose votes held sway at the time.
Dr. Lucas is a wonderful, honorable man, but he has done his duty as president, more than once.

You are exactly right, Dr. Lucas has gone above and beyond the call of duty, on more than one occasion. I think that it's just a shame that we have been unable to find someone of his caliber since.
For the immediate future, one of the cadre of professional Interim Presidents we've heard about, or else our own interim commissioner as soon as he can be replaced. Then a serious, nationwide search.
