"Colleagues, I spoke with Kevin Walters of the Hattiesburg American this morning at the Payne Center. He said it was alright to post on our listserv that he was offered a position at a paper in Tennessee and accepted. He will start his new position in early April.
I knew his high quality work would lead him to bigger and better things."

I bet he doesn't need any help loading the UHaul. Ken, Lisa, Greg and Shelby have probably already offered their help. Great work, Kevin! Good luck.
Your coverage of the situation here has been incredibly reliable: steady, accurate, balanced, probing. Thank you so much for your professionalism. We will miss you.
This is what we'll miss about Kevin - from todays American:
"But businessman Brad Brian, one of the event's organizers and vice president of Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Bottling Co., said the invitation-only meeting is solely about spreading good news about Southern Miss. Faculty members and the media are not invited..."

Did he say to which paper he's moving? I enjoyed reading the Knoxville paper when I was in Tenn. doing research last summer. I'd love to hear that a large-market paper is giving Kevin the journalistic opportunities he has earned.

Nothing was posted on the FS listserv about the paper.
I'm glad for him but sorry for USM; he is leaving big shoes to fill at a crucial time for the university. I hope the HA puts another first-rate reporter on the job.
Why do you people love this man so much? Everytime I've ever met him, Kevin has been well aware of his greatness. He also has no problems letting you know of that greatness. You act like he's the Ghandi of print journalism.

Well, I respect him for several reasons: (1) he digs, as a good reporter should; he doesn't simply re-type press releases; (2) he actually seems to have a brain, which is not always true of journalists; (3) he writes clearly; (4) he develops his stories in detail; (5) he doesn't seem to be pushing any agenda, one way or the other -- he simply covers the story; (6) he shows remarkable restraint when he is threatened with public lynching. By the way, I have never met him, so I have no views whatsoever about his personality. I do think, however, that his coverage of the story has been a zillion times more professional than the coverage provided by the HA last year.
Lemmings, you are all lemmings. You think exactly what you are supposed to think and the head lemming is Kevin Walters. I've known several occasions where he's gotten it wrong on subjects other than USM.
If you have concerns about his coverage you should contact Mr. Walters' editors. They can be reached at the HA offices at 582-4321 or by email. You should ask for Jon Broadbooks, the executive editor or Skippy Haik, the publisher. But be prepared to cite examples of Mr. Walters' ineptitude and "getting it wrong." I'm sure they will be happy to be rid of him once they learn of the trove of wrongness he has committed.
Hysterical! Can you blame the man for getting out of this insane fishbowl? And by golly, ya'll don't have to be so bitter just because he can't take all of you with him.
I've met the man and I think he is quite handsome. I hear he makes a mean Curry too. Not sure if that has anything to do with the Ghandi comment.

And so, being a decent citizen, you called the H.A. and told them so they could run a correction. No?
Well, you must have written a Letter to the Editor pointing out the error. No?
Oh, maybe you wrote it down and left it the folder with those papers having all of the positive things SFT has done for USM. Oh, you lost that folder too? A lot of people seem to have lost that one.
If you did get any numbers wrong, it wasn't because you didn't try to do a good job. You weren't part of a larger conspiracy. Your heart has always been in the right place. You are a proud member of the fourth estate, and the American will not be better off without you.
So whether a story is about eating raw turtles in Perry County or dam breaks in Purvis, if you write it, I will read it. And I will greatly miss you my friend. "You're the best ever." Good luck.

Nice strategy Punkethos - threatening to withdraw future allocations of Sangria. But this can't stop me from coming to the defense of Dr. Thames, and pointing out that Mr. Walters is as equally weighted with shortcomings as the beseiged university president.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon me to outline these shortcomings with a "Top Ten Failures of the Kevin Walters Administration."
#10. Refusal to cede right of way to Rev. Ken Fairley on Hattiesburg city streets.
#9. Swollen head, caused by constant flattery from left-wing faculty, prevents Gulf Coast COO from fastening noose around neck.
#8. Unwillingness to accept information from USM administration as gospel.
#7. Excessive use of butter/margarine on even the smallest piece of bread, especially at President's Council refreshment table.
#6. Harrassing friends to the point of tears when it's discovered they haven't read the books he purchased as gifts for them, sometimes YEARS after the fact.
#5. Taking reporting skills to excess (while off the clock) by asking, even the most casual acquaintance, about their income, personal hygiene, etc.
#4. Denials of anger...at the top of his lungs.
#3. Attempt at making fashion statement out of furrowed brow.
#2. Inability to secure expeditious apology from Truth.
And the number one failure of the Kevin Walters Administration.........
Refusal to engage in shared governance with roaming neighborhood canines!
