I did some fact-checking, in connection with my next Liberty and Power piece.
I asked Dean Doty whether the Dome is imposing a 4/4 teaching load on College of Business faculty. His answer is no. The Dome wants to cut down on the number of Business professors who teach less than 3/3--but it may not get what it wants.
Dean Doty has not heard of any W. J. Johnson taking up residence in the College and is quite sure that WJJ is a hoax.

Did you happen to ask Dean Doty if he attended the meeting on Monday in which the reported statements were made? A friend of mine called to verify this, and his secretary said he was out of town on Monday and Tuesday.
I know I'm about to get skewered here, but Harold Doty's no choirboy. You might want to try to verify that. Perhaps Amy Young can provide you with a list of CoB AAUP members. One of them surely can give you the straight skinny on that situation.
Those who want to lionize Doty would be sorely disappointed if they got the whole story. It's been said that Doty is doing exactly what Shelby is doing, just at the college level.

Doty is a member of AAUP, I am pretty sure. He'll bend and make mistakes in judgment (it sucks to be dean here), but I don't think he would outright lie to RC.

He probably wouldn't lie, but he definitely has a track record of presenting information that he wants released and suppressing information he wants suppressed.
Remember this: Harold Doty doesn't want to end his academic career as the CoB dean at USM. He is always vita-building in preparation for his next job. If the Grimes memo hadn't threatened his career (by threatening AACSB accreditation), then he would never have gone public. Ask around about the types of activities he is pursuing in the CoB. I got it straight from a friend in the CoB...Doty has his own version of "renaming streets," "putting up new light poles," "hanging banners," etc. It's all about putting lines on the vita. He looks out for #1 and everyone else is #2. Just do some more checking.

No denying that Dr. Doty can be highly self-serving--no argument there. But the idea of going over 3-3, even for non-research active faculty, is pretty outrageous in itself, unless the faculty member does absolutely no service or research and is a total slug of a human being wasting our oxygen. I can't speak with confidence on the following, but I doubt that there any such folks in COB (but who knows). So a general over 3-3 load pressure from the Dome is a big enough issue to warrant concern.

SK,
Suppose, for the sake of argument, that everythign you say is true.
You haven't explained why Dean Doty would be motivated to lie about Thames imposing a crushing teaching load on Business professors--or about Thames sending a special enforcer to make sure his will is done in the College of Business.
If Thames were deliberately harming the College of Business in these ways, wouldn't it be in Dean Doty's interest to publicize them, and do so immediately?
If you're going to get "facts," you had better check more than just one or two sources. I am not going to debate the motivation here. I am not in the CoB. I only know what I've gotten firsthand from CoB faculty. Have you ever called one single CoB faculty member who is not an administrator?
How do you know when an administrator is lying? His (her) mouth is moving.
Good grief, it is really easy to check on teaching loads. Just look in the schedule of classes, count the number of class sections each is teaching. There are several in the COB with more than 3/3, but you will find that they have squandered the release time they have been given previously and do not do any measurable research or service other than that mandated. I believe that you will find that the "normal" load is 4/4, and deviations from that are release time for service and research. I can tell you from experience, those who do not uphold meet research expectations will teach more.
On the other hand, the COB's new policy of additional research time for new, untenured, reflects the increased expectations.
Any Business professor at USM who wants to contact me off the board about CoB teaching loads, etc., can find my Web site rather easily... with contact information on it.
And Shelby Thames doesn't read email at Clemson University.
