In today's HA there is a story about a new apartment complex project in the West Fourth Street area of Lamar County, approximately 1.5 miles from the Southern Miss campus. The developer is Nick Welch, a Jones County resident who along with the Thames boys funded the baseball field house. http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050308/NEWS01/503080304/1002
The story mentions the pending removal of 128 units from Pinehaven and Nick Welch is quoted as saying "this is a good time for this project." Given that Welch is a staunch Thames supporter http://www.usm.edu/pr/prnews/mar04/welch.htm, and SFT owns apartments in town, could there be a Thames-Welch connection in this venture? Think about it, SFT gives the green light to the Pinehaven demolition project, which displaces 128 unit residents. These people will have to live somewhere, why not 1.5 miles from the Southern Miss campus? SFT as landlord? Maybe, maybe not.
While I wouldn't put anything past Thames, I know Nick Welch and think he's an honorable businessman. I'd be shocked if he were involved in anything inappropriate here. Yes, he's an athletics supporter--his son played baseball here a few years back--but he's not the enemy. Thames is.

A give basket. How nice. One of the fringe benefits of being an administrator. I never got so much as the proverbial Apple.
