HOOD JOINS MARKETING, PUBLIC RELATIONS STAFF
HATTIESBURG -- Chinika Hughes-Hood has joined the Department of Marketing and Public Relations at The University of Southern Mississippi. Hood, of McComb, is a 1998 graduate of Southern Miss, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications.
After graduating, Hood began working in television, including a number of Mississippi stations--WDAM, WCBI, WLBT and WAPT. She also worked in Houston, Texas, at KTRK-TV, a station ranked among the top 10 markets in the country.
“Chinika’s broadcast experience will serve us well as we share good news about Southern Miss faculty, staff and students. She will be an asset to our marketing and PR team,” said Lisa S. Mader, director of marketing and public relations at Southern Miss.
While fulfilling her dreams of becoming a top-rated news producer, Hood tied the knot with her high school sweetheart, DeCarlo Hood. After returning to Hattiesburg, where her husband serves as an assistant district attorney for Forrest and Perry counties, she worked as a freelance reporter and feature writer with the Hattiesburg American.
Hood may be contacted at (601) 266-5568 or by e-mail at chinika.hood@usm.edu.
What happened to the widely circulated story that Mader was leaving USM for greener pastures in Jackson? Is that happening, and could Ms. Hood be her designated replacement?

She is full time, I would expect. Her title is "reporter," which is odd (if you know PR, you know that's more of a newspaper term rather than a PR term). I had hoped she would have had the same title (and pay?) I had as assistant director for news and marketing, considering her exceptional experience (related in the press release) and her education (though I didn't know Southern Miss offered a bachelor's in "communications." In PR classes we learned that "communications" meant the technology; "communication" is the craft.) Perhaps it was meant to be speech communication?
Anyway, no matter. I hear she's very, very nice and I've read her stories and they are well done. I sent an e-mail to say hello and give me a holler if she needed anything, but her e-mail bounced.
I teach for Tulane in Biloxi, as well as online classes for Kaplan University and the Arts Institute. I teach courses in mass communication; PR; advertising writing; editing, design and layout; communication and conflict, and an intro computer course.
