Every college at USM should be meeting to express its objections to the Coca-Cola putsch.
For instance.... no one's mentioned the College of Business in this connection, but it would be suicidal for the CoB folks to ignore the attempted putsch, when Thames and Malone are bent on wiping out their college.
At the very least, the putschers need to explain where the College of Business fits into their plans for the university.
Another quote from the Independent article:
Liberal arts and the liberal arts faculty "has set the direction of USM for the past 25 years," she [Drews] continued. "Now we have to change direction and Dr. Thames is attempting to do that despite opposition from the liberal arts faculty."
This is an explicit call for a return to the McCain era.
Every college at USM will be badly hurt if Bonnie Drews and other Thames backers get their way.
Robert Campbell
PS. Now that Bonnie Drews, basically speaking for Thames, has explicitly repudiated Aubrey Lucas's entire legacy, will he finally speak out?

Sorry Dr. Campbell but I disagree. They absolutely do not because they have no legitimacy in any academic decision-making whatsoever. Not in arts, not in sciences, not in education, not in health and not in business. We must not give them any credibility.

As occurred at the FS meeting, the opposition will say, "What is the Impendent?” "How do you know the quotes are accurate?" and "We can't act on this poor information which hasn't been checked out." So all that is left is some citizens having a private meeting to "support" USM. So what? I'm still hoping that FS executive committee makes a public statement for the Senate next week after checking the facts. Also AAUP should have one. Getting the individual colleges to meet the last week before spring break will be very difficult. I know it would be difficult to have such a meeting in CoST. Good luck to all of us. "
I agree with you. I am still hoping I might get to talk to Mr. Pittman this week to confirm his version. I hope if we are successful in getting a CoAL meeting together, he'll come to cover it.
We'll see -- you are completely right about it being a difficult week. I do think a few of us might consider going up to Jackson next Thursday . . . .

Naysayer,
All I meant was that the putschers' scheme will harm the entire university.
They have merely picked liberal arts as a scapegoat.
I assume you do want the media to ask them what they think the actual effects on USM, and on Hattiesburg, will be--if they get what they say they want.

The IHL Board meets this week. Committees meet on Wednesday. Full board meets on Thursday. I have no idea what is on the agenda, but Klumb has said the whole situation at USM will be discussed. I doubt they will do anything on Thames until he has his annual review. That was originally scheduled for April, but I believe it may be later after Klumb' presidency ends. Just a guess.

I was informed that IHL meets during the spring break.........Am I incorrect?????

Stephen, I heard a rumor that someone (a senator?) communicated with Crofts about the Independent article. Have you heard this? Another rumor is that the Coke meeting may involve SACS violations? How?

The IHL webpage has March 17th (during spring break) as the next scheduled meeting in Jackson.

Oops. You are correct. Coke is this week, IHL during spring break. I was wishing spring break was next week. Back in the old days we taught, did research and some service on the side. Now it's running to fires every day.
Bonnie Drews is a sweet woman, but hardly an intellectual giant. Her claim to fame is that she is a Hightower and can remember when her granddaddy and her surgeon Daddy ruled the social roost in Hattiesburg. While her family is less prominant now, she still smoozes as if the name Drews could make or break anyone in town. As best as I can recall, she actually went to Old Miss, and had a couple of kids get degrees at USM, one in art and the other in science. Bonnie married a very hard working dentist who grew up blue collar and has grown a prosperous business here in town. Needless to say, whenever Bonnie has been in need, or even in desire, she has always had family wealth to bail her out. Bonnie believes that government spending on anything is a sin, that any dollar paid in taxes is a dollar stolen, and that if government has a service that people need then the people should buy it (except for those services that protect her investments, her property, her health, her family, her husband's business... - those should be free). The whole notion that the state pays people to think, especially to think about subjects that are not immediately marketable - vexes Bonnie. Perhaps that reflects the fact that she has never had a job on which she depended (working part time at Steinmart does not count), and that the highest priorities in her life are golfing and the DAR. Since Fred Drews is far more pragmatic and far better educated than his wife, I would be surprised if Fred is the moving force behind the Drews involvment in the CocaCola meeting. I hope he appreciates that his wife's apparent crusade for SFT is hurtful to USM, and possibly bad for his business. Perhaps those of us who are his patients should mention to him that we are dismayed that he (or his wife) has loaned his good name to this sordid business.

I know with absolute cetainty that Crofts has recieved the Independent article and acknowleged its reception.
There are several passages in the SACs guidelines that might be pertinent here. Perhaos Jameela will put them up, since she was the one who alerted some of us to the specific language.

Thanks Stephen. It's good to know some of the rumors are true. Perhaps Jameela will post those SACS statements so someone can get copies to our "community leaders" at the Coke meeting. Might even make a good Hattiesburg American letter.

Right. See the "Principles of Accreditation," http://www.sacscoc.org/pdf/PrinciplesOfAccreditation.PDF. According to section 3.2.4., the board should be "free from undue influence from political, religious, or other external bodies," and also should "protect the institution from such influence."
By the way, I was told by a SACS director at another institution that the SACS complaint policy should have been broadly publicized. (I'm getting back to her on how/when, etc.) See http://www.sacscoc.org/pdf/complaintpolicy.pdf. Does anyone remember hearing anything at all about it?

Copy Grahpics sold, many, many copy machines to USM (do you have a Konica machine in your office?)"
Other off campus printers are used as well. Any time an off campus print shop can give a lower estimate you can take your printing off campus as you should be able to do. Knight Abbey, Heiderman Brothers, etc. have done jobs for various offices on campus. Copy Cats does not have an inside track.

Never intended my comments to suggest that Copy Cats had "inside track"
Original post should have said "go in Copy Cats (not Graphics) and see USM work on display"
