"2. USM USM Foundation Approval of Lease Agreement
The University of Southern Mississippi requests approval to enter a five-year lease
agreement with the University of Southern Mississippi Foundation to lease a
Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft (N777AQ). The term of the lease is effective upon USM Foundations acquisition of the aircraft projected to be December 1, 2008 to November 30, 2013.
Lease payments will be issued monthly with the first 59 payments in equal monthly installments of $16,662.98 and the 60th payment including a final balloon payment of $907,053.85. The total cost for the lease is $1,890,169.67.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Pending changes recommended by the
Attorney Generals Office and receipt of a revised lease payment schedule,
Board staff recommends approval of this item.

Almost $1.9M, plus all the fees for pilots, fuel, insurance, and hangar fees.  At the time of budget cuts this year and proposed for next year, is this a good move?  And even if it is, does it look good right now?

I guess it would depend on the justification. How much is spent on air travel by university officials? If it is cheaper to lease the plane, do it, if not, don't.

I see that I could go for an overnight trip to DC tomorrow for around $350 from Pine Belt. In two weeks that flight will cost around $550 (I have never understood how ticket prices work). So assuming that a trip to DC would be a common trip for an administrator and tickets from Pine Belt would average around $450, the question is, do we buy more than 70 plane tickets a month? ($1.9 mil / 60 months / $450; I know my math is fuzzy, but the more I learn about economics, this seems to be standard methods biggrin)

I think this plane should be made available to faculty for conference travel. Give them the option to pay for the gas rather than purchase a commercial ticket.

The poster, HA Skeptic, is channelling Boudreaux.  I can't help but wonder if Ms. Wells picked up on this item from following this board.

Irrespective of the poster critical of the article, it is good for everyone.  If the need for a plane is justified, better to make that justification public.

In my opinion the entire issue is distilled in the one sentence paragraph: "The University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University both have airplanes."

Also, there seems to be little clarity about where the purchase money is coming from.  The USM Foundation is buying the plane, and the university will lease from the Foundation. Right? I suspect that the poster who is concerned about the spending of her tax dollars is not alone.  If private money is making the purchase of the plane possible, should that fact not be emphasized?

Here we go again! And I thought USM got a good one ... she makes the argument of how much time she had to spend in Jacksonville and could not attend to matters back home. Dear Dr Saunders, yeah, you would have been home sooner, but at what cost? What does it matter that the other two universities have planes? Gawd, am I glad I left. And that You Tube link to flying over Va Tech ... those people there are worse than Ole Miss and State supporters combined. They really need help, professional help. Good luck to those good souls who stayed behind.

Ford is selling their corporate aircraft.

First Alaska, now Ford.  Looks like the USM Foundation might be in a buyers' market.

Will the athletic department use the plane for recruiting trips outside the immediate region?

With the recent budget cuts, I wonder if the lease of an airplane is still on the table.  Even though the Foundation may be purchasing or leasing the airplane, can Southern Miss afford to agree to any kind of lease at this point?
