This may be late for the weekly award, but I hope Mr. Wonderful's crew takes note!
This was an awesome post & is the sort of thing that keeps me hopeful for the future of the university, more than any meeting of "influential" people down at the Coke Plant. Those folks don't have to get up in the morning & go to work at the university.
Please see this weekend's New York Times Magazine section on former Times editor Joeseph Lelyveld's father's beating in Hattiesburg, Miss. at the hands of two white men with a tire iron. There is also a photo of Mr. Lelyveld's bloodied father -- not for the faint of stomach -- and a photo taken today of the train tracks where the incident occurred. Mr. Lelyveld's father was beaten for helping try to register blacks to vote.
That Mr. Malone's comments advocacy of a public lynching of a reporter come now, 40 years later, should really be of no surprise given what is a mindset for violence here in Hattiesburg that clearly has been here all along.
I can understand how some may feel this is a stretch. No violence has been visited as of yet on KW as of yet. Yes, Mississippi has come far. Yes, violence toward all exists everywhere. But was it anywhere as organized, as inbred, as accepted like it was in Mississippi? And in Hattiesburg as well as Oxford, Jackson or Vardaman?
Regardless of where Mr. Malone was born and raised, those in power in Hattiesburg at USM clearly have tied themselves now to a past where violence was revered and a hatred flourished.
Shame on the people who stand by and won't speak up to put this down a resurrection of this now.

I suppose anyone who has ever said "He makes me so mad! I could just strangle him!" is contributing to the vicious nature of Hattiesburg, MS, and its checkered past as well.
While Malone's comments were inappropriate, they are a completely human response to what he feels is a threat to him and his boss.
I get the feeling that many on this board are nit-picking when it comes to Malone. He's done much worse than this comment about Walters, and nobody has pursued it to the end. Malone violated academic freedom on the coast. He tried to backdoor an executive MBA program and displace a portion of the coast library. He is teaching out of discipline with no real credentials to support it.
I feel like what's being said about the "lynching" comment is like "Hey! There's the serial killer we saw on TV last night! He's driving down the road in a stolen pickup truck! Somebody call the cops, because he's going 55 in a 35 mph zone!"
Malone is wrong in this situation, but to continually beat this dead horse is bordering on absurdity. Why not focus on his larger issues?

However, one must have the authority to arrest based on the speeding ticket. Unfortunately, it is beginning to look as though USM faculty have no authority, even over their own academic destiny or that of the university.
People refer to Thames as the "teflon president" but have you noticed that the Kenbot never gets pinned down either? He has managed to skate past the issues of being hired without a national search, without appointment letter at a salary spread across multiple accounts to keep him underneath the IHL administrative screen? His job juggling, indefensible standards, empire building, incestual hiring, classroom invasion, procedure flaunting, and development of secret programs gets hidden by his unique reporting structure. His inflammatory comments never undergo proper scrutiny because he always manages to avoid public Q&A situations. I've heard it's because he is a loose canon and will "blow" when publicly challenged so he is well protected from being put in that situation.

He hid from the PUC, he hid from the Faculty Senate...has he ever addressed ANY university group that included faculty members?
The Faculty Senate has provided for Malone to be evaluated as part of the annual administrators' review, even though, originally, he was not included in it. Better late than never. Maybe some of the teflon will be chipped off by this year's evaluation. Maybe.
On the Coast, regular faculty will meet to fill out evaluations of Dr. Malone during the week after the Break. Any regular Coast faculty who haven't gotten this message yet should e-mail me at my USM account and I'll fill you in. Written comments will need to be typed and placed in a sealed envelope. These too will be collected on the day the standardized evaluation is distributed/collected.
Kudos to Ray Folse for responding so promptly to the Coast faculty's request that Malone be evaluated as our "COO."
Is the multi-tasking Dr. Malone to be similarly evaluated by any of the H'burg units he oversees? I just realized I haven't heard anything about this.
